Default 4.88 gears for a V6?

so, I got my 33's, and I'm going to put them onto my V6 88 4Runner. also, I got new ring and pinions: 4.88's. Is that to much for a V6? I know that the 4cylinder's go good with 4.88 and 33's, but sounds like most people who have 33's and a V6 go for less than 4.88. I mean, a V6 with 4.88 would kick ass for off-roading (probably wouldnt have to regear the t-case), but wouldnt it kill me on the streets, not to mention the highways? My engine would rpm @ 4000 and I'll ony be going 70 mph. Any thoughts?

Go to Randys ring and pinion web site. They have some good charts and calculators for gearing. You probably had 4.11s. Going from 4.11 to 4.88 is not that big of a jump.

its a bit much for 33's..... but the difference is going to be about 3-400 rpm between 4.56 and 4.88 gears

thats too much gear for 33's. 4.56's is perfect for 33's. I have driven this exact combo and its perfect.

You guys also have Tacos with a lot more power than he does. Kyle - I went from 4.56 to 4.88 and the difference was NIGHT AND DAY. With the powerband that the 3.0 has, a couple hundred RPM makes a HUGE difference

4.88 is perfect for 33's with the 3.0 and manual tranny. (That's what I have - it tachs 3000 RPM at 70 MPH)

If it's an auto, I would look at 5.71.

Well from the other end of the spectrum. I have a 90 4runner, 3.4l supercharged, 33-34" nitto tires. I think I would perfer the 4.88, currently running 4.56. The 4.56 is a tad low running through the mountains but perfect for the flatlands. When i can afford the hybrid toyota LC 9" Diamond I will be regearing to 4.88. I don't spend much time above 75mph, I'm mostly city with my mall crawler.
