Default Compass and temp. went out...?

Guys, has this ever been a problem on the Tacoma? Buddy of mine has an 06 and his "accessory meter" as it is properly labeled just went out all together one day. Anyone else ever have this problem?

Whatta ya mean by 'went out'?

You're referring to the overhead console temp/compass?

Have you taken the overhead console down and checked the wiring for proper connnection?

Sounds like you lost power....? Fuse? Bad connection?

Bad connection, I had that happen once. Check the wiring and ensure the connection is tight.

Mine sucks! I will get in my truck at 7am and it will read something like 20 degrees. I will then get back into my truck at around 2pm and it will still read 20 degrees when it is in the 50's. It will then take forever to get back to the actual temperature reading.

Thanks guys for the responses. Ya know, he may not realize there is an off setting. I sent him the wiring diagram that shows the connections so he has what he needs to trace it down. Just was wondering if there had been any previous problems I didn't catch.

It does seem that there is common theme going on here, check out this thread. It has the cause and remedy too. Certain resistors on the temp/compass module overheat and unsolder themselves. A very common electronics type of problem and easily remedied, add more solder!

Mine went out under warranty as well. Not sure what it was...probably the connections! They come in handy though.

mine went out, but extended warranty wouldn't cover it, because they said it was the display that was inoperable not the sensors?

Stoked51, that really sucks! Take that sucker out and see if those resitors need resoldering. I am sure it is Rohs compliant, ie., no real solder but that new stuff that does not work nearly as well. Mixes with regular solder just fine though so find someone that solders and let them fix it for you.

Default Oh Yea!!

I took out the board and resoldered the two 510 flat chip resistors. there are two side by side and three side by side, for me it was the two.I took apart and plugged board in by itself and touched until display came back this is how I found out what the problem was. Just so you know I used a 15 watt solder iron so I wouldnt burn up components This was successful and compass is currently working. If you look at back of board you can see a bit of browning where the two resistors are so I guess they do get hot and melt there connections.

My temp is always off as well. My f150 was dead nuts on...
Is there any way to calibrate them?
But when its -20 and it reads -15...I'll take it!

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this system? I went to the dealer yesterday and wanted to buy the Toyota repair manual (3 volumes) they wanted $170.00 per volume. That was a lot more than I thought it would be.

What I want to do is disable the dimming function of the unit when the lights are on during the day. I want to install a light sensor (light dependant resistor or a photo resistor), so that at night the system works as it does now, but if it is daylight the unit will not dim so I can read it.

sorry to bring this back up yet again, but my compass and temp stopped working yesterday (figures 2 days after I get it this stuff quits!!) and Im trying to remove it so I can see if I just need to solder it but am not having any luck getting the overhead console itself out. i have taken the screw out of the sunglass's holder area and it is not moving back or down to come out so I can get to the temp/compass unit. anyone know why it may be extremely difficult to get out? am I missing screws somewhere?

Mine stopped working a few weeks ago... again. I haven't really missed it since it quit working...

Looks like I'll have to solder it up when I get time or when I give a damn

WesJ, download that huge one. It'll run off of a thumbdrive in any windows computer. A manual you can always pack around with you. How cool is that? They say you just have to yank the console down after you get the screw out, it's held up there by plastic claws.

Look for the large flat resistors to see if the solder has cracked around the ends of them.

Just got done fixing mine, it just takes a real hard pull on the console to get it out.

After I got it out and apart I did what others suggested and pushed the resistor down and sure enough started working right away. So I brought it inside and put some solder down and I hope it holds.

Just a note, if you push the resistor down I recommend doing it with something other than your finger, that sucker got hot QUICK! After I barely touched it and realized how hot it already was I used the handle of a small screwdriver to gently push on it to see if that was the culprit on mine too.

Thanks for all the help guys!!

Wes

They ALL have that spot near the edge, just resolder those flat gray/black resitors back to the solder pad. You can't see that burnt spot through the colored bezel.
