Tacoma Alternator Rebuild

Alternators handle the demands of charging, and over time they do wear out. Heavy-duty batteries, off-road lights, winches and amplifiers take a toll on your electrical system. Additionally, water and mud will prematurely wear out the brushes. Rebuilding your alternator not only makes economic sense, but gives you a sense of satisfaction by "doing it yourself." Alternator rebuilds are a relatively simple job requiring only the most basic of hand tools.

Here’s a quick overview of both the 3.4L V6 and 2.7/2.4L I4: Each engine has one of five different alternators; they are usually marked with either the part number or the amperage.

The basic components of an alternator rebuild are:

• Brushes (you need two) or Brush Holder Assembly (You may use the brush holder assembly if you don’t want to solder)
• Rectifier (or Diode) - optional
• Voltage Regulator - optional
• Front Bearing – as needed
• Rear Bearing – as needed

Order your alternator rebuild parts using the alternator number (i.e. 3.4L #3): Note that when brushes and brush holders are both offered; choose only one or the other. Brushes require soldering; Brush Holders come with brushes already attached. Also note that this is not available for the 80A alternators:
