Disable Daytime Running Lights

From Faq

Daytime running lights can be annoying if you are off-roading, and your lights are pointed right at your spotters eyes. Other than that, I like them. It's for that reason that I did this mod, and installed a switch so I could turn them off and on at will. This is very simple to do. Look under your dash on the driver's side and you should see something similar to the following picture:

This couldn't be in a harder place to work in! Unclip the wire harness, and remove the black protective sleeve. The wire you want to cut is on pin #2. It is a white wire with a black stripe. If you don't want to use a switch to turn the lights off and on, just remove the pin and tape it up, put the black sleeve on and plug the harness back in. If you want to use a switch, cut the wire about 1.5 inches from the harness. Strip about 1/2" of the wire away on both ends.

Run two wires to your switch, mount it in your location of choice, and tape up all your connection points. Put the black sleeve on and plug the harness back in. You're done. Turn your truck on with the switch in the "off" position, and your lights should no longer come on. Turn the truck on with the switch in the "on" position, and your lights will come on like stock.

Important Information

I have had many people with trucks newer than 2001 report that this mod did not work for them. They report that the lights did not come on as desired, and that the high-beam indicator remained on until the lights were flicked on and off. Not having a new truck to work on, I simply cannot tell you the solution. The Toyota TSB containing this information only goes up to 2000 models, so anything after that is just a guess.

Let me make this clear: The mod WILL work on all DRL-equipped Tacomas (up to 2004), however the high-beam indicator may remain on until you flick the high-beams on and off.

If you do this mod to your truck, and the high-beam light comes on, you can always reconnect the pin, or solder the wire back together. IT IS entirely reversible.

If you have successfully done this modification, and you do not see your truck listed below, please add it:

2001 Double Cab - Successful 2002 Double Cab - Works Great! Thanks:) 2003 Double Cab - Perfect! No trouble with high beam light. Thanks. Wait answered too quickly. After a little more than a week, the hi beam light now stays on. When I turn the headlights on, the high beam indicator goes off and functions normally. When the lights are off, the indicator glows dimmly, even with the key off. Still less annoying than hunting at dusk with the headlights on.
