3rd Gen 4Runner Frame Swap

I thought to show my activity still exists, I would post a thread on my recent frame swap, first sections heavy on words, so Rodge will ignore that , but the rest is pic heavy!

Thought I would post my frame swap here from my build thread an explain a little on what I did.
WARNING: LOTS OF TEXT BUT I PROMISE PHOTOS LATER!

As many of you know, I found a hole in my frame this past summer.
Nothing huge but pretty much the sign of the beginning of the end to the frame.

This devastating find was found just after I was handed the title to the truck finally being able to make it all MINE!
So I had to figure out now what I should do.

I had many options.
1) Revert to stock and sell, and buy another to build
2) Buy another, swap everything, and scrap the old and keep what I could for spares
3) Patch and keep till if falls apart some more
3) Total it
4) Frame swap

As you all know, I am very attached to my 4Runner, I have gone many years, many miles, and have told many stories with her, and getting rid of her was really an option I wanted to avoid.

So I did some digging, obviously Toyota had frames available for the Tacomas and Tundras (and now Sequoias), so I wanted to see how much a 4Runner frame would be...
Got the part number and price, coming to just under $2500, for that price I could buy a reasonable 4Runner needing some mechanical work (which I could do) for that price, that and The 3rd Gen frame is no longer available.

So I went on the hunt for a truck.
While there was no time frame in which this needed to be done, I still wanted to keep my eye out on craigslist and such to see if a deal would come up.

So while searching far and wide (mostly in the south and some as far as Texas and Cali) I came across a diamond in the rough so to speak, in my stepdads home town of Roanoke (if you knew my life its kind of scary how this City has effected my life so much).

SO with a few calls and e-mails and event planning, I borrowed my neighbors diesel truck and his car trailer (rated for just under the weight of a 4Runner D'OH) and dragged my good buddy along with me, and in one weekend, roughly 800 miles later, and in a grand total after cost of truck, fuel, food, and tolls (around $1100) I had me a donor truck:

It was a perfectly running and movable Runner, only issue is the actuating motor in the transfer case was questionable...
The trans in this 4Runner was strong, pulled great, and was quiet, and since this truck has 269K, I have a feeling it was either replaced or rebuilt once, and decided that I wanted to attach it to my engine (which has 69K less miles) and put it on the donor frame with my body.

I got this donor back in October, and didn't do the swap till February (due to circumstances with where the swap was done).
I did some preliminary frame swap preps, gutted the donor interior, and took a spare J-shift case and swapped it over so I would just have to do the whole assembly when the swap day came up.

Separating the 4Runner body from frame is a very simple process and can be done in about 45-60 minutes! (Depending on rust and such)
I will update this post with a to do list of what needs to be done to separate body from frame.

But I have to tell you when I reached this point, in the back of my head I was like "Good God What have I gotten myself into!"

My Buddy hauling the body away with his 97' 5spd E-locked Runner

I wanted to clean the frame up of the mud it had on it from the wreck, plus the oil from the leaking engine (all seals on it where shot) and to prep it for paint.
I sprayed engine de-greaser all over the entire frame and pressure washed it:

This was the worst of the rust on the entire frame:

Painted, Gloss was the only thing I could find anywhere around the day before the swap, so gloss it is, now I can boast that my frame is cleaner then Paddlenbike's lol!!!

Then my truck came apart:

Sorry for the crappy cell pics, but its the best I could do with greasy hands...

Then my baby came apart:

Sorry for the crappy cell pics, but its the best I could do with greasy hands...

So as of now this is how they sit:

The white one is what you will be seeing at the next event.

So you're going to beat on the white body with your old drivetrain and then build up the one with your old body ?

I also wanted to give a big shout out and thank you to Zach for helping me out with this swap, from going to get the donor all the way up to helping get them sitting the way they are now, with out him, I'd be up shits creek.

The plan for now is just to wheel that one, and since I am towing it up instead of driving I feel I can beat on it a little more and not have to worry about the consequences since my other 4Runner is still drive-able.

Zach and I have talked, he thinks I should ditch body all together, get some tube, make a frame throw some seats and a wheel in it and go, maybe throw some 37s on eventually.

I myself have jumped around with many ideas of my own and am starting to settle on an idea of my own of keeping at least the fire wall and floor board up to the b pillar and thne just adding tube around it and then wheeling it that way.

With the body off, I could conceivably trailer this thing with my 4Runner to and from Rausch or where ever I decided to go wheeling, I would just have to get the tundra brakes switched over and get a larger trans cooler for my 4Runner.

Looking good. I would wheel it like it is and then maybe cut the upper portion off the back if it feels tippy. There is something to be said about having a body that you can close up and be warm and dry - I limit my wheeling now since I don't have a closed cab since Addy comes with.

Hopefully see you on the 20th

So when did I become illiterate?

If I were you I'd take what you got, gut the cab, put an internal cage in to keep the weight down and wheel the piss out of it.

Wheeling a truck that you don't have to worry about getting to work in on Monday morning is under rated...

Not illiterate, I think in another post I made, your said something like "too many words more pictures" or something along those lines.

I had another idea for what I would like to do, I'll try to attach it, but that might be to heavy. But if I at least keep some of the front and just do a cage around that I would be fine.

I don't want to
Worry as much anymore, I have gotten a little more confident but not caring I think would be better.

I can't find the pic, attach it tomorrow when I do

Curious, take any pic's of how bad your runners frame was? I see alot of them at work really scaled up.

I've done the body swap thing but I had to do interiour as well since my new body had nothing inside. Its not hard it just takes time, having the lift made it lots easier.

So for shits and giggle I decided to see if the a/c system still had a vacuum in the white truck, and when it did I decided to charge it, and it held, and the thing has nice cool a/c now for the summer months lol

We'll see where things go, after the Spring fling with the Ohio guys I am going to set my Runner up for towing (Tundra calipers, Trans Cooler, Brake Controller, maybe some air bags in the rear, and some gauges to monitor trans temps) and go from there, then do a few test tows around the area to see how it does with the current full body and see where to go from there

Yeah I have seen worse then mine, but with the area and what the truck is being used for, even if I started to combat it, the frame would eventually look like swizz cheese, but with patches instead of hole, I figured if I want to keep what I got I'd do the swap.

I just couldn't think of a better way to still using the working drive line, the whole truck in the end cost more the the first phase of the lift I ever bought.

I only have 2 pics that Avi didn't post. I put the white body on the lifted frame while Avi was at a wedding in New York so I went out and played a little after I got it all buttoned up

It was stuck in these, 2wd and open rear. I had to go get my 4Runner to pull it off this mound

About how you swapped

Hi,
I have 4 runner whose frame may have seen better days. I am interested in at least removing the body and fixing the frame or swapping. Can you tell me what I need to do that job and the procedure please. I do not have access to the lift, but I guess I can find one.
Thanks bud.

Sorry for no response, I haven't been getting notifications from this site in a very long time.
I think you may have contacted me on other forums, I am not sure, It is not a very easy task to remove the body from the frame without a lift.

If you are still monitoring this, any pictures of your frame, where exactly is the rust located?
