Lightbulb Shop rates, what would you pay?

Lately I have been kicking around the idea of opening a shop for light-duty fab stuff (think sliders, bumpers, diff armor...), paint/body and mechanical work. I've been wondering what to charge for labor rates. I charge $20/hour for paint or mechanical or welding, but other places have rates that are many times that. I understand, they have overhead, rent, employees and lots of other stuff to contend with; but since I'm only one guy in a small shop with minimal overhead... what should I charge? What would you pay? Does this make sense?

Example:
Local shop (no names)
$60/hr paint labor (includes prep work)
$90/hr mechanical
$100/hr welding... and that's just MIG; their TIG rate is too nuts to post if you ask me. They didn't have a plasma cutting rate, so I assume they torch or cutoff wheel stuff?

Basically I'm asking so when I do actually open a shop, I'll know what to charge people off the street. Yota folks will get deals, don't worry about that. Jeeps pay extra 'cause it's a Jeep thing. I haven't had work done at a shop, so I don't have a solid idea of who charges what for what.

Input welcome...

Thanks!

We can't give you a number. You need to factor in consumables and then figure out how much your time is worth. Or you could charge people for actual material used and then charge per hour on top of that.

Well the 4wd shops around town charge 80 to 100 an hour for any work. The cheapest I have found was 60. I also know a few in your spot that charge 25 to 35 an hour. They are the work in the garage type. Your good at what you do so you should make sure its worth your while to be working. 20 an hr seems low except for me.

It's just in the planning stage; I have lots to consider... when I'm fishing in Alaska in June. Bristol Bay, all month, 12 on 12 off.

It'd be a "few days a week" kind of thing until we get things rolling I suppose; I'll probably stay at the Black Forest shop until enough money comes along to buy/build a better shop in a better location... although BF is pretty sweet; just a PITA to get to sometimes. Plus I need more room, plain and simple.

There are probably business templates, programs or whatnot out there I can use, so that'll be my focus of search for a bit. I'm not trying to corner the market or anything, I want to work for myself, provide quality work for a great price as best I can. It's like Glaser Steel: I asked the guy once, "Why are your new steel prices so cheaper than everyone else in town?" He told me "I've already made my retirement money; I charge enough to pay my employees well and keep the lights on."

Awesome.

Figured I'd throw this out and see the input, there are a few points I hadn't thought about, so thanks!

You could get a 2 bay or single bay garage with cheap rent if you werent on a main drag strip. The guys just off Nevada pay like 600 a month for a single garage door with enough space for 2 cars.

There's a smaller shop up North Hancock at $1500/month, has a lift, air compressor and is wired for 3-phase 240 if I remember right. From google maps it looks like it's tucked out of the way and backs up to a tract of small houses; like the tiny matchbox houses in the north end. 2 bedrooms, 900 sq ft, etc.

Ideally I'd like to buy some land and build a shop to my specs, but that would cost a lot... years ago I priced out a steel building with concrete floor, electrical, plumbing and all that and it was an easy $80,000, not counting what land would cost.

Damn shit's expensive!

Ill have to ask him again when I see him as to what he pays. After what you just said 600 seems too low to be right. I know a guy who just opened a honda repair shop somewhere around me. Ill have to see what his rent is.

Hey are you able to weld my battery box down this week? If not I will take it to work and do it there. Should take like 5 min.

That's a definite possibility; is Crusher on the trailer, can it make it to the shop? Or will I bring the welder to you? Saturday looks open so far; same for next month... quitting Midas already; I'm not digging working for other people after working by myself for 2+ years.
