New Tacoma owner... moving to colorado springs....

Hey all I just found out that my new assignment will be CO Springs, Where's all the good wheeling spots? Does anybody know of some good 4x4 shops in the springs, or Denver? I recently picked up a stock 96 tacoma, I'd like a bumper fab'd up, a rear locker, new gears and a lift kit. I was gonna wait till I moved up there then get all of those done. (kinda new to the wheeling scene, I've done some 4x4 before never had a locker just LSD) What locker do you guys recomend? This is a 2.7 SC manual, 31" MT's, has manual locking hubs in the front too. I don't plan on getting too crazy, as I want it to still be a DD and not get too teriable of Gas mileage. It has stock gears, (atleast I think it does) If I'm gonna go between a 31"-32", Should I re-gear it? Any Help or Ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Selectable locker if you can afford it, either e-locker or ARB.

Welcome. TONS of 'wheeling down in that area. Check out www.4x4trails.net

x2 on selectable locker

You might want to regear just for the altitude. Personally, I think 32's are a waste (since most are 32x11.50) - go to a 33x10.50 (which fits with the same amount of lift) and enjoy the extra ground clearance.

Thanks, for the website! I will look into the selectable locker. What gears do you think would be good for that altitude? I don't want to completely kill my mileage, As I will be driving the truck all over CO. I have alot of family in Denver, and Longmont. I planing on alot of out door activities all over the state.

like troy said just go to 33X10.5s and regear to 4.88s if u have a SC. you can fit 33s with no lift on tacos so dont be afraid to wheel it with a stock suspension. there are a lot of great shops in the area. for a bumper check out armorology in the springs there. amazing product but pretty $$. and I think he has about an 8 month wait time to get your truck in the shop so call him now, have a bumper in october. as far as a locker, def get a selectable in the rear if you want to daily drive it. if you go the elocker route you will need a whole new axle since your housing is an 8.4" and the elocker housing is an 8". an ARB would also be a good choice but that setup will run you more than a used elocker axle will.

I can fit 33's on my SC with stock suspension? Right now I have 31/1050/15. Is the stock tire size that came on the 4x4 SC? I read the GEAR CODES FAQ's. Maybe I read this wrong. This is the code my wife read to me over the phone. A/TMBQ3A/W59 (I think the "Q" is meant to be a "0") From what I understand, I have a 7.5" Ring Gear, 4.10, 2 Pinion open. Is 4.10's not enough to push 33's. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I've never changed gear's in my trucks before. The main reason to change the gear's is because its a small 2.7l motor? (The other truck I own is an 06' Dakota 4x4 with a leveling kit an 32's, with 3.55, and a v8? Its pretty quick.)
What the hell kind of locker is this and how does it work? It's listed un locker? Is it a non selectable? http://www.desertrat.com/products/?id=6315

I've never heard of the brand before. I know about ARB, I don't know if I wanna shell out that kind of money right now. What other options are out there?

I'm thinking for now I'm gonna start with a leveling kit, to get rid of the raked look. Then locker then gears and tires or should I to gears and locker together?

you can fit 33s on the stock suspension with a little hammering on the pinch weld. nothing too crazy. stock 4.10s sound about right. and i was a little confused originally thinking when u said "SC" you meant super charger. with a 2.7 4.88s would be a good gear ratio if all you do is highway driving. 5.29s will give more power but higher RPMs on the highway. most agree that 5.29s also provide enough extra power to compensate for our altitude. I have trouble pushing 32s with my stock 4.10 gears. eventually im going 5.29s but i also want to run 35s

That's a lockrite, auto (lunchbox) locker, non-selectable.

I'm not sure what you have in the rear, was your truck a TRD? If not you have the 8.4 which limits your options quite a bit (I think the ARB is the only selectable locker you can put in that diff).

I don't have a TRD model. Its just the 2.7 base model Single cab 4x4

Sounds like you have what is referred to as the 8.4 axle. I'm 99% sure the only selectable locker out there is the ARB, but alot of people like to put a detroit back there.

You're other option is to do what AvsFreak did and swap out the whole thing for a TRD axle with an e-locker. If you want to go this way, check with Russ (vwfastg60) at Northern Colorado Auto and see what the going price is.

ya how'd you know... well with all the bases there and 1 army post you had a 75% chance I was AF... lol Ya I'm excited, Its the main reason I accapted a year deployment to Baghdad, PTT (police transition team) Training Iraqi Police (IP). Kinda unusual deployment 3 months training, 12 deployment. Only 350 SF (Security Forces, MP)have done this deployment before. All the army guys give us flack! Funny tho, We're really the only teams on ground over here outside the wire, we exploit sites with EOD, we go the murder scenes exploit them and help the IP's collect evidence. (they're laze we usually do everything). It's cool tho, the moment they try starting crap I ask them: "How do you like being a FOBit? Did you have fun guarding the chow hall?" They usually are silent after that.

I won't be there till next April. I can move up my move date, but I don't want to move in the winter time. Plus, I want one more hunting season in Oklahoma. BEER WOULD BE AWESOME!

Yes, I believe it was the "cheaper" option, so more likely to be on 4 cyl std cabs like yours.

IMHO, it's a significant advantage as the manual hub front setup is full floating (the axle shaft bears no vehicle load), whereas the ADD is only semi-floating (the axle shaft helps hold the wheel on the vehicle)

Thanks! Ya, a whole year! That's ok tho, I'm still excited, Colorado is an AWESOME state! I can't wait to explore it! I can't wait to go wheeling with some of you guys, and get in the garage and do some and some and transform my stock tacoma into a wheelin machine. I'm not super mechanicly inclined, I know the basics, I've installed 2 lift kits before, nothing major (one was 2wd and it was very easy. I'd love to learn and know more.

Yeah, when I moved out here my dcab was bone stock. Did some awesome wheeling with it too, then the mods started. Learned from the 'old timers.'
