First Post to CO Forum

Hey all,

I live in WA, and am looking to take a rode trip to CO. this summer. Only plan so far was to check out Telluride and drive around the Imogene pass. The little Ive read so far is thats an awesome drive. Id like to do a lot of camping along the way. Spending the most time sleeping outside as possible (not public campgrounds). If anybody has any recomendations or threads good threads to check out let me know.

Thanks in advance, Jake

Welcome.

It all depends on what you want to do. There are tons of areas in this state with free camping and great trails to drive. There are also alot of other activities to take part in if interested. What level trails are you looking to run? How long do you plan to stay? What else do you want to do while here?

We will probably stay 3-4 days. Im not looking for any traits Too intense, don't really want to break anything half way across the country. But also not looking for anything too mild either. We're mainly looking to just check out other beautiful areas of the country, maybe some hiking too.

it would be worth trying to get over to the Beuna Vista area. there's a few trails that are mild with outstanding views (Mt. Antero, Baldwin lakes) and some that are a bit more challenging (Iron Chest, Grizzly Lake, Old Chinamen's Gulch). And there's some good camping out at 4-mile area, and up Mt. Antero/Baldwin lakes trail.

Check www.traildamage.com for descriptions, etc.

With only 3-4 days I would suggest just picking one area to explore. That way you will get the most out of your time here.

You mentioned Imogene Pass

Some other trails in the area are

Black Bear pass

Ophir pass

Clear Lake

Bullion King lake

Red Mountain Pass

Corkscrew Gulch

Poughkeepsie gulch

Let us know when you are going to be there and I am sure you will be able to find a truck or two to run with.

You'll likely get into some snow in that part of the state this time of year. Be prepared for cold weather.

There is also open camping anywhere above 10000' on the Tincup Pass and Hancock Pass trails.
