Spare Tire Carrier Build

I finally got tired of my spare tire just sitting in the bed of my truck. So I decided it was time to build a tire carrier. I did not like the idea of any of the ones I have seen online, so I decided to create something a little different. All of the weight rests on top of the bed rails. And there are 4 bolts that hold it into place using the trucks factory rail system. I didn't take many pictures of the build process. But here they are anyways.

This is the main portion of the tire carrier. This rotates around the rest of the carrier allowing the tire to be locked in the down position, up position, or at a 90 from the bed:

Here is a picture of it completed and in the down position:

In the up position:

And one with paint just because:

Let me know yalls opinions.

that's awesome... like the idea of options

nice work

would be sweet if that rotates freely at the flanges...
and is locked in place with a pin/padlock

does it ? or do you have to unbolt the flanges to flip it ?

Oh and does it have a third position ?
Meaning: can it be stood up vertically against the back of the cab ?

thanks for posting...
I was planning on doing something similar

oh.. and can we get a closer view of the flanges ?

It does rotate freely around the flanges. I put a pin in the drivers side flange and a padlock in the passenger side flange. The added benefit of this being when the tire is in the down position it cant be taken out without removing the padlock as the rim doesnt clear between the carrier and the bed.

Currently I have it designed to stand up in the middle of the bed. Meaning tire between the tailgate and the carrier. If you slid the whole unit towards the tailgate then you could stand it up near the cab also. Currently where I have it mounted in the bed, its not possible to put the tire in that location as it cant clear the front of the bed during spinning.

If you specify what you wanna see on the flanges then Ill go out there and take the pictures and get them posted.

guess I just wanted to see how the two flanges were mated
specifically on their inner face(s)

do the flanges have some sort of cylindrical insert design...
and if so.. how far does that extend into it's mate ?

Gotcha. Ill get you a picture today but I think I can explain it too.

The flanges are actually just 3/16" plate that I cut out in a circular shape and I welded 1 piece to each end of the main portion. Which just so happens to be 1.75" tube. I then inserted a piece of 1.5" tube all the way through that and made my bends on either end of the 1.5" to position it where I wanted it in the bed. Then I cut out 2 more flanges and welded them to the 1.5" right up against the flanges on the 1.75" unit. Then I drilled holes in positions that would work for each location I wanted the tire to stop in.

Ill snap a picture or two of that today while I'm working and get them up later.

Thanks Relentless.

Nice. The up position would plenty of room for a draw system. Was thinking about doing something similar. Two bars so I could move my yakima basket down when I mount a roof top tent. Deciding to mount yakima spare tire mount on top of draws once built and leave basket at home.

Its only held in with 4 bolts. So I guess it could be, but with the tire on there its a heavy bastard. And most thieves go for the easy steal anyways. They want something that will take them less than 30 seconds to get at.
