Arrow FZJ80 Axle Build

-For future reference the correct ubolt diameter is 3.25 inches, they will look like they wont seat on the axle tube, but once tightend, they cinch up and the gap disappears.

-I used Rough Stuffs Axle kit, leaf perches, ubolts, top plates etc.
i dont know if it was a mistake on their part but the center pin hole was smaller than 1/2". thats a hair smaller than stock. and Im using beefy center pins, like a 12.9 grade metric socket cap bolt Ive used ever since my aal center pin broke way back.
my solution was to flap disk the head on my pins down till they fit the tiny hole on the perch, and I reused the All Pro flip kit top plate so the shank of the pin would fit. didnt feel like drilling through the new half inch thick top plates.

Ok, getting close to swapping the rear. Don't ask why I did the rear first. It's a long story and it just worked out this way.

Watching the junkyard remove my new axles.

Giving them a bath.

Boner.

Strippin em down to see whats good.

Removing all the link brackets.

Trying to get the rust off.

tractor paint works awesome btw.

the goods

Random neato truck pic.

Welding in TG inspection plug. Oughta make filling the thing easier too.

Ill eventually be getting another rear and turning it into a front with mini outers as time and $ allow.

funny you ask. nothing, working on the seat brackets.

new diff studs and hdw. and got the perches welded on yesterday.
perches @ 0* with pinion @ 10*.
oh and I wasnt sure of the center pin to pin measurement so matt and i did the best we could with the tape measure and having the shocks, ebrake, etc in the way. came up with 39.5" pin to pin.
so thats what its welded on at.
apprx 7 1/8" from the outside edge of each flange to center pin.

Very well then. I'll let you slide with that answer since that does sound like something I would say. Now remember this one cause I won't, I'm allowed to ask questions as many times as necessary and get the answer cause I'm not getting any younger and I don't remember as well as I use to. Dang what where we talking about now?

EDIT: go easy on the rear axle with that e-locker. The last thing you want is to snap an axle and not be able to get it out. That's why I decided to go FJ80 non e-locking in my truck. I don't have to worry about breaking a damn axle and not being able to get it out. But shit I'll never break an axle because I'll never get to wheel the damn thing. It sure does make a pretty garage ornament.
its not that i dont believe all the warnings, i just dont understand how a 1.31 inch 31 spline FF axle that does not carry the weight, it only turns the tire, designed for a 6000lb vehicle, is more of a concern than a 1.27 inch 30 spline SF axle designed for a 4000lb vehicle.

so you technically have a stronger, larger shaft that only transfers power to the tires

versus a smaller axle shaft that must transfer the power while supporting 4k lbs.

why is it such a concern? ive yet to break a rear shaft why exactly am i supposed to be worried about the new axle?

i understand that IF it breaks it will be a mess, but if i cant break a stock taco shaft how am i supposed to break a landcruiser shaft??? in all seriousness, im not being a smartass, just wondering.

honestly i was not the least bit worried about my stock axle and now i need to be worried about a bigger axle thats stronger? (at least on paper)

its like Im downgrading or something. that wasnt the plan. please explain.

and for shats and giggles, if i had the money i wouldnt have even considered the elock. ida gone straight for the open diffs and put ARBs in them, but that woulda been another $2k considering 2 axles. (im just doing the rear now) but the front will come in time.

It's not so much the shaft breaking to worry about it is the twisting. Since the splines are so long that makes them easier to twist.

I'm not saying don't use it or that it's a downgrade. I was just stating that I decided to sell mine and go with the cheaper non e-locking rear. You will more than likely never break it and I would probably have never of broke it. I just got my non e-locking one way cheaper so now I can spend money on other things. I plan to use an Aussie Locker in my front and rear to save $$$.

I was just putting the information out there. The rear axle breaks have happed a larger number of times on the 80's. Check ih8mud.com.

I never had a problem with the rear axle and e-locker on my buggy. It was the strongest thing I've run yet. I really hammered on it during competitions and not once did it even hesitate. And when I pulled it apart to change the gears from 4:10 to 4:88 the splines were not twisted and it slid in and out with no problems. Go for the rear 80 with e-locker, it's a beast to say the least and definately a huge upgrade from the stock Tacoma axle... you're on the right track. Sure take heed from the warnings, but in most cases they were running a 39" or larger tire that weighed 10000 lbs and they may have had 800 HP to spin those beasts 100 mph - yes anything can break and twist - but with your 4 banger and up to about a 37 or 38 inch tire - you really don't have much to worry about. So there you go - a little peace of mind from me - now stop talking about it already and install the thing and get the front done so you can wheel !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Jack I feel better.

I heed the warnings guys, its just like I said though, Ive never once had someone mention the possibility of breaking the tacoma rear and now all of the sudden Im supposed to be worried about this bigger axle.

Unfortunately my friend James has not had time to setup the diffs so I wont have it swapped for TO but it will be in for SETO.

Jack I reckon I wished I had come down and let you do the gears but James was chomping at the bit to do it for me and it saved me the drive. Not that I dont want to come visit cause I do. And will sooner rather than later.

The front will come as time and money allow.

Hey no problem. I know the drive is a big deterent. I'm always willing to help, wish I didn't need to rush home after work to pick up my daughter every day, cuz I could have met you somewhere and picked the diffs up.

Hope you get it done soon, I can't wait to see your truck with those axles in it.

The rear axles on 80's also have to do with the added weight of an 80...IMHO you should be in good shape. Out of all the 80 owners I know, the avocado is the only I know personally who has broke one (running 37's)
