Colorado Wheeling

In short, I headed up to Buena Vista for the Toyota Jamboree, and ended up staying for 9 days of awesome wheeling all around the state...

Started things off on Sunday on Old Chinaman's Gulch with the crowd that stuck around for more wheeling after the Jambo was officially over.

Bad idea..

Towards the end of the trail, you can check out the exit to Carnage, part of which runs alongside OCG. More on this trail later

Yep, that's the line

Then I drove down to Ouray to meet up with JeepGuy and Stealth.

The next day the 3 of us hit Black Bear Pass.

Baaa!

At the top

Instead of enjoying the view...

Snow, and lots of it, in August!

Heading down towards Telluride.

What a bunch of posers

After enjoying some burgers and brew in Telluride, we headed up Imogene Pass, where we camped @ around 10,000 feet.

Looking back at the ski slopes, we were headed for much higher elevations.

The view from camp

In the morning

Tomboy ghost town

Heading further up the hill

I think it was 113° in Phoenix this day

Getting near the top.

Look left..

Look right..

Buddy was intrigued by the white stuff

Knew I should have brought my skis

Some Jeep stuff I'll never understand..

Yep, a fried 'Spal' fan

Luckily, the Jeep offed itself towards the end of the trail, so Stealth and I had time to run Poughkeepsie Gulch later in the day.

John decided to play around on an optional obstacle

Further on up the mountain it started rain / hail / snowing on us.

Wet tires + slippery rock = not going anywhere

Hey look, a slip-n-slide right into a pool!

Apparently the storm we caught at the top of the pass had caused some havoc on the highway.

Once back in Ouray we grabbed some burgers and brew and headed to Grand Junction.

After enjoying the 1st rain free night of the trip, Stealth and I met up with another rig from VA and headed over to 21rd, while the Jeep was waiting on a new fan back at camp.

Teeter

Totter

x2

Sweet lunch spot in the shade.

And then we got here

To the left of the big rock

To the right

We went right, and then the rain came..

Not exactly what I had in mind.

Got some new stripes there..

...and then we got to the exit. No bypass here, which meant we had to go back down the trail instead of heading up and out of the canyon, as planned..

After a day of R&R, for both the rigs, and the drivers, we headed east on I-70 towards Holy Cross.

Where we were joined by many of the CO-TTORA crew.

The Jeep finally made it back to the trail.

French Creek

Waiting for everyone to get across

John decided to see how good a rock anchor that solid axle really is..

..turns out it works great for that purpose

Holy Cross City

Cleavland Rock

Retreating in defeat.

Stealth bringing Zilla back down the rock.

Headed back to camp.

The next day, while some headed home, we headed down to Buena Vista, where we ran Iron Chest in the afternoon.

Posers!

The next day it was time for the big boy trail, for some of us anyway. For Stealth, JeepGuy, and Doug, Carnage was on the menu.

Recognizance shots from hiking Carnage in the morning.

Stealth going up the 'gatekeeper' on Carnage.

After watching John make quick work of the entrance, Jay and myself made our way over to Old Chinaman's Gulch.

Jay tackling the hard line on 'Whale's Tail' which had always eluded him before.

After running all of OCG in an hour and a half, we hiked down Carnage from the exit road just in time to catch John lining up for V-notch.

Pulling line, this was going to be the the theme for much of the day.

Shawn making the 'squeeze' look easy.

John, trying to squeeze Zilla through.

Sometime around here, the front diff on Zilla let go, and for the rest of the day John was driving, er, dragging, a 2wd up the trail.

Here it is at the exit. Winch only from here on out

After this it was a long night of winching Zilla up the exit, at the hardest point of which it completely gave up, blew the main fusible link, twice, killed the battery, ate the alternator, and was left completely inoperable for the last half of the recovery. Finally, at around 2am, we got it to the top of the trail, were able to hitch it to my Tacoma, and get it back to the trailhead and the trailer.

Finally, it was time for me to head home, but not before crossing Engineer Pass, and coming down Mineral Creek trail on the way back to AZ.

Heading back towards the snow covered peaks around Ouray.

This is at the very bottom of the pass, an avalanche had piled a huge mass of snow at the bottom of the canyon, it was probably 75° here, and there was no way all that snow was going to melt by the end of the summer.

A stream running trough a snow drift.

..and finally back on pavement on the way home.

ENJOY

Not on this trip. Made cleanup last year in Farmington and it was great. But we didn't get there this time.
