Big bear snow run - Mar 3, 2018

First snow trip of 2018!

Big Bear got about 6-8" of snow yesterday and is due to get another 12" of snow on Friday. We should have near perfect conditions for a snow run this Saturday! Let's do this while we have snow!

The typical snow run boiler plate info-
Quote:
4x4 and M+S (mud and snow) tires required

We recommend the following minimum equipment:
All Terrain tires
F/R recovery points
Recovery gear (winch, tow straps, shackles, shovel, etc)
Tire chains
We don't require chains on the trail, only to meet CHP requirements on highway as necessary.
Meet at the trailhead of 3N16 and Hwy 18 at 9am.
Trailhead for 3N16 is here:
N34 17.620 W116 48.810

Optional
7:30am Meeting at McDonalds at I-15 and Bear Valley here:
N34 28.280 W117 20.575

I'll be going up the back way through Lucerne if anybody wants to meet up at the McDonalds on our way to the trailhead.

Dress warm and pack a lunch.

Looking like there's a good chance we'll head up. Just picked up a 100 Series so running street tires (plenty of siping! lol), no sliders, and only factory armor underneath.

Nice! No worries on it being stock. We hit up the flat trails mostly, so your biggest issue would possibly be the lack of ground clearance turning the yacht into a plow.

Sometimes we plan Sunday runs. It would be better for this event I think given the weather, but I try not to plan Sundays to avoid the traffic coming down the mountain late in the day.

Updated the list.

So far Big Bear hasn't received the snowfall from this storm. That should happen this afternoon and tonight. Crossing my fingers they get some reasonable snow fall from this storm.

Thanks to everybody that joined us for this trip. 7 vehicles in total came out. We got a bit of a late start, but we made up time quickly since Big Bear didn't get any of the snow they predicted on Friday.

We headed in 3N16 from the east side and went over to John Bull to look around. I played on a rocks a little bit before getting stuck. Charlie busted out the winch and got me off the rock I was high centered on. From there we continued west and did a quick loop on 3N07 before moving on to 3N12 and the back side of Delmar mountain. There was a good 3-4 inches of snow still remaining from the storm earlier in the week. We played around a bit at the top and let the kids have some fun. From there we headed south to 2N71 and across the front of Delmar with a view of Big Bear lake and city. Connected back with 2N09 Polique Canyon and then went back into Holcomb and eventually onto White Mountain. The winds were crazy strong over the peaks at White Mountain. Probably an easy 50-60mph gusts. We ran White Moutain backwards (east to west) then split up at 3N14. One of our crew headed back to Big Bear while the rest of us went North down into Lucerne to air up and head home.

Love the video from Charlie. Nice summary of the various trails we were on. The few pics I took are below.

East entrance to John Bull - 3N10

This is me high centered on a rock. Had to get winched backwards (thanks Charlie)
