Progression of a Chick Truck (1st Gen 4Runner)

Just because I'm having a hard time keeping up with the slow progression of my truck, I figured I might as well start up a thread and document as I go. We've got big plans with a small budget, but only time will tell how soon we'll get it done. Lots of photos, though slow progress.

1989 Toyota 4Runner as purchased -

22RE, 209K Miles, Automatic Trans, 4:30, Open/Open, 29" Street Treads, Base Model w/ Vinyl Interior, Lots of Rust, and Lots of issues. $1K seemed like a good deal in the ATL area with a running engine and decent interior - especially since I was looking for an automatic (don't ask!)

When I brought it home: 9/2008

topless the entire reason i wanted a first gen!!

The first task was to get the engine tuned up, and fix the small issues that kept it from being a smooth ride on the road.

Replaced the Brake Booster, Fluid changes, and a "pimp my ride" style tear down and clean up.

we took the next weekend to fix up the exterior, including the rust that had taken over the fenders and quarter panels over the wheel wells.

I came up with a cheap, but effective fix.... we cut out the rust, and welded in some sheet metal we got at lowes and cut to fit the holes, creating a crude patch work.

rust fix kit

cut out:

because it was mostly just the outer side that was rusted, we were careful not to cut into the inner fender... i sanded and painted over any rust that had spread into the inner fender.

welded and sanded down:

wash, rinse, repeat on each of the other rusted areas.... you get the point.

i knew i'd want more than just the stock 29"s on there, so while we had the fenders in pieces, we decided to trim them back a little to clear a larger tire (had a set of tires ready to go)

Now let me say ... if you're going to trim fenders just a little, i'd HIGHLY reccommend doing it this way, it was easy, and created a CLEAN line ... and it didnt require a saws-all! Also, it doesnt leave that horrible sharp rough edge to cut into your tires that a lot of people have problems with after trimming fenders.

What we did was cut little tabs into the fender, and used a piece of wood to bend the tabs back, creating a clean folded edge along the fender.

tabs:

bending them back:

now that the rust was gone and covered, I decided a cheap fix for the metal patches would be to cover them up with bedliner/paint. I went with hurculiner because it seemed to have the "gritiest" texture, and I wanted to cover the seams and welds from our patch work.

prepping (make sure you SAND IT WELL or the stuff won't stick!!)

my hood was horribly faded and scratched, so I figured I might as well cover it too!

btw - sometime around here, i got the 32s put on some steelies i picked up from another ttora members.

the bedliner turned out pretty good IMO -- i like the black/grey contrast, especially with the black removable cap.

covered up the patch work metal pretty well:

winter 2008 into 2009 ...

some minor upgrades, we did the timing chain, cover, water pump, oil pump, etc and found most of the plastic guides to be worn/broken. Also, having the timing correct made a big difference in engine performance.

3/2009

took a trip to Windrock/Coal Creek (farthest I have driven a vehicle alone ~5hrs).

had a great time on the "baby trails" and the truck did ok!

apparently, I got a little too much mud in the truck, and two weeks after windrock, my alternator gave up on me AS I WAS DRIVING THROUGH DOWNTOWN ATLANTA!

my truck died, and i attempted to coast off the road and broke down, in all places, near a horrible part of town and down the road from the homeless shelter (dont ya just love atlanta?) ... called up a friend and put a new battery in that gave me just enough juice to get it home.... installed a new alternator, and we were good to go.

not a lot of progress happened over the summer, unfortunately. Colin and I went on tooooo many trips and didn't stay home much to work on the trucks!

8/2009

minor victory :: replaced the interior ac/heat control panel

it pleases me greatly to have a clean interior!

and the lights even work!

btw-- what are those white things in the air vents you ask? CHEAP TRICK! they're rolled up pieces of dryer sheet folded over the vent clip... cheap air freshener that isn't overwhelming... the truck had a very musty/moldy smell when i bought it, and a couple weeks of these in there and it cleared up eventually. (they work great in the winter when the heat blows thru the vents, i like my dryer sheets, so i thnk its great )

the chick truck spent most of the summer topless, as the a/c doesn't work (yet) ...

i got bored looking at her, and gave rustoleum bedliner a try on the rocker panels... I would not recommend this brand, stick with the hurculiner. The rustoleum is pretty much just black paint with hardly any texture to it.

don't forget to grease your U-Joints!!! When the truck starts click/squealing and shaking ... check them out!!

if you dont grease them ... you'll open then up and find out that ALL of the needle bearings have turned to dust!

p.s. pink skid plates are the shhhhtt! sliders and bumpers will follow soon with a new coat of "watermelon" paint!

I'm tired of people telling Colin they like his truck, or asking me about "your boyfriends truck" !

It's mine dammit!!

So I've been having some transmission issues lately, intermittently though... yep, apparently thats what I get for wanting an automatic.

Symptoms: It won't downshift when coming to a stop, therefore when I'm ready to pull away from a red light or stop sign ... the trans is stuck in 3rd gear!

I have to manually downshift into 'L' and then when the rpm's are up, i put it in '2' which is actually shifting into third gear! All the while the "Over Drive Off" light is blinking like crazy.

anyway, after lots of searching I found how to read the codes that are being indicated by the OD Light Flashing. There is a transmission diagnostic terminal on the drivers side near the ignition coil ... ground out the plug and the OD Off light will flash a set number of times to reveal the codes...

unlike what the FSM tells you, THIS is the way to do it, jumping wires in the other terminal on the passenger side DOES NOT WORK on the OD OFF light

This is what the flashing lights mean:

SO ... my codes read 42, 61, 62, & 63

but everything i have read (here, yotatech, & pirate) say to start with the solenoids and go from there. If you're reading this and having the same problem ... HERE is where I am buying the solenoids from.

We should be doing the repair over the 2/19-20 weekend, so I will update when we get done! We will also be removing the timing cover and re-sealing/seating it because its leaking since i replacing the timing chain about a year ago. As well as replaced the worn out lower ball joints because i need an alignment!

maybe after that I will get something "fun" done on the truck ... all this maintenance is getting old!

Now that the transmission issue is fixed, its time for some upgrades.

Within the next few months, i would like to accomplish:

- TRD e-locker complete rear axle swap (most likely from a tacoma)
- Re-gear from stock 4.30 to 5.29

lets see how long that takes...

So my truck was overheating ... to the point that I had to pull over and let things cool down... in traffic in atlanta

so back to maintenance rather than something fun for it.

- radiator flush / refill with new coolant
- found that just about every bolt on the timing cover, water pump, and oil pan were loose! Hopefully this stops the 'decorating' i've been doing to the garage floor.
- oil/filter change
- new hoses/belts
- finally put a fan shroud on there

and ta-da, no more overheating. thanks colin. <3

now i just need some A/C so I can stay cool in there, its only april and it's hot out!!

Been tossing around some ideas for a front bumper ... finially time to replace the broken stock one.

original (addicted offroad ) vs. modified idea bumper

one of our NC-TTORA buddies (http://bigjakesfab.com/default.aspx) is going to be doing the building, and I hope to see some progress in the next couple weeks!!

well the truck has only moved once from the driveway in like 2-3 weeks ... we went on vacation, and now its too hot to drive it w/out a/c.

I got pics of my bumper-in-progress ... hopefully we'll be able to get up to NC to get it soon.

thanks to metalmangler for loaning his 4runner to get it built since we're 5+ hours away!

still have some adjustments to make to it before we finalize the design, but i'm pretty happy with how its turning out. The "stinger" hoop needs to be bigger to accommodate the lights we have for it, and i think i want it to lean further out from the truck.

Since I've been running around without A/C all summer ... (we're going to pick up parts this weekend!!!) I had been contemplating the fact that a lot of the HEAT in the truck wasn't just coming from it being so hot out ... but after an hour long ride, the floor and tranny hump were on FIRE! Like hot to the touch.. and radiating through the entire passenger area.

I researched a bit and ended up going with the "summit brand" heat/sound barrier ... got it today and was surprised to open up a box of "HushMat" which was one of the name brands I was looking into buying

anyway, I ordered (12) 23" x 12" sheets, not really knowing how much I'd actually get covered.

I pulled everything out, seats, console, vinyl and cleaned up the floor a bit. Got to work covering the trans hump, driver/passenger floor board, and up a little bit on the firewall. the last of the 6th sheet was used to cover the trans hump all the way to the back seat.

You could easily finish the floor of a standard/ext cab truck with 6 sheets.

I contemplated where the other 6 would do the most work, and decided to use them to in the cargo area, where most of the nosie comes from. A little trimming and fitting, and the 6 sheets covered 97% of the cargo area, and cannot be seen under the factory vinyl mats. All in all, taking everything out of the truck, putting this stuff down, and reinstalling everything, it took me about 4 hours to get it done by myself.

One important reccommendation I'l make is to WEAR GLOVES when working with this stuff, and with aluminum tape ... my fingers look like I have a million tiny paper cuts it hurts to type!

Took it for a test drive, and I can definitely notice a difference. I can actually HEAR the radio! amazing!

I'd really love to get some more of this, or maybe something a little less expensive, and line the quarterpanels as I think thats where a LOT of the road noise comes from. Maybe soon.

anyway, here are some photos of today's work.

Colin got to work and put in a new radiator (V6 rad), thermostat, and aux trans cooler ... didn't get too many pics, but you get the idea

we installed the aux trans cooler between the a/c condensor and the radiator, it's a pretty good fit, but was a little tricky to get the hoses to not rub/bend around the corner back to the transmission/radiator connections. Hopefully this will help cool things down a bit under there - so far so good on then engine temp, but i'll update when i make the 60 mile trek to my parent's house later this week ... thats when the engine temp usually shot up, and the transmission tended to act up when it got really hot.

The V6 radiator did "bolt in" .... BUT its taller than the 2.4 rad and the cap makes contact with the support things under the hood. a little trimming and it shouldn't be a problem. Also, the fan shroud is a wee bit too small, but still fits easily around the fan with no clearance issues.

we swapped in another a/c compressor, but apparently the issue is more than just a compressor ... plus the one we swapped in was used and is leaking oil. Guna bite the bullet and buy a new (re-man'd) one and go from there. I realllllllly want this fixed asap!

v6 radiator

fan shroud is a little bit too small, but it'll do.

I am super excited to say that the new radiator and transmission cooler have made a 100% improvement in my truck's performance. Just got home from an hour long ride on the interstate, running ~70mph ... what used to turn into a cuss-fest at my truck was now a surprisingly pleasant ride.

No overheating, no erratic shifting in/out of OD, nice smooth shifts and a MUCH 'cooler to the touch' transmission hump/shifter bezel in the passenger area. I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out!!! THANK YOU COLIN!

Going to get the a/c checked tomorrow (hopefully) ... and i pray i'll have some real answers here soon. Wish me luck!
