Auto tranny/t-case/front axle question.

When I have my 4runner in park, in 4wd with the hubs locked should I be able to spin the front d-shaft by hand? If not what should I be looking at?

No, it shouldnt turn by hand. Only time it should turn by hand is if the tcase is in neutral or 2hi and the hubs are unlocked. Sounds like a couple problems. Hubs arent locking and something is going on in the tcase.

No the park pawl should not allow it to spin unless the wheels are in the air and the tcase is in neutral.

If the t-case is bad can I change it without dropping the trans? I just had the hubs apart and they looked good, maybe I messed that up.

The hubs are working now, so that is fixed. I can still spin the d-shaft by hand in 4wd parked(hubs unlocked), but the t-case applies power to the shaft when in gear, so IDK about that. Crazy automatic trans deal or something? I noticed today at work that the front out-put on the t-case was leaking, so I decided to replace the seal. When I unbolted the four d-shaft bolts and removed the shaft the flange nut fell off the t-case shaft. I replaced the seal and put everything back together. The T-case makes noise now(maybe bad bearing from the loose flange or vibes from the unbalanced d-shaft) what would you do with it?

1-run it till it breaks then replace with my spare t-case

2-swap it out now with my spare

3-save money for the inch-worm adaptor and gear driven case.

1 or 2 AND 3.

If you already have a spare case, I can tell you that swapping now is a heck of a lot better than swapping on a trail somewhere, after waiting around all day for someone to go back to camp, get the spare and tools, and come back to you.

It all depends on how put out you would be if the rig broke, and how much freetime you have to swap it.

I guess I'll run it till I get time to swap it out with my spare case and start pinching pennys for the adaptor and gear case. Would a five speed swap be worth it to get rid of the chain case?
