Yup! Even in double low its not nearly as low as most rigs with crawlers, but I had plenty of problems with the rig on that trip, and no problems with the t-case setup. So that particular item is on the back burner until the more pressing items get upgraded or repaired.

Also, don't disregard the driver error factor. All of my wheeling prior to that trip has been in an automatic. So I am still learning the nuances of wheeling a 5-speed. Would rather wheel an auto, but hey, Zilla is not my dream machine. Its just an intermediate build to get me some more experience and have some fun in before going bigger some day.

It used to have Marlin's dual ultimate crawler with 4.70's in the rear case, but that one blew apart on the hwy along with the tranny, rear third, parking brake, driveshaft, and I suspect some bottom end damage to the motor. Haha! Yeah, that was some serious carnage when that happened, and I was on the hwy at the time! Not even on a trail. Shameful! But its why she's a trailer queen now. Learned my lesson the hard way on that one.

Before the Colorado trip I found a replacement set of duals with factory gearing in both to get me back rolling again... which came with a spare set of 30 spline hubs. I got a good deal on it and I couldn't pass that up. Yeah, the dual ultimate had more options and is certainly nicer. But for getting me back on the trails and for what I paid I have no complaints on that deal I found for a used dual case setup.

You know Chris, sometimes you just gotta wheel what you've got and make-do until you can afford (and feel the need) to upgrade. That has basically from what I can tell been the story of this exo'd Runner all along... Which is why so many things don't work as well as they could/should. I still scratch my head every time I look at the tube work. But I never let my IFS truck's limitations keep me off the trails. And Zilla not having stupid low any more won't stop me either. I bought it to beat it, and beat it I shall! Give me some time. It'll continue to get improved over the years as I keep wheeling and wrenching on it. Eventually, if the 21 spline with dual factory setup gives up on me or I get sick of it and want to go lower, I'll probably drop the coin on a similar setup to what was in the rig when I bought it.

but judging by those vids he never was in compound low with so much clutch riding. heck, I can't even stop when in low, low 1st gear even standing on the brakes

Could have been worse, like a full video that should be titled "take some more air out of your tires dumbass"

And yeah, that was a fun trail until the front diff blew. It all went to Hell after that.

War Rated Nice Vids. I have to ask though, is that electric fan on Jeep Guys rig as irritating in person as it is on the video?
06-10-2012 11:11 PM
007max Yea, as soon as I have that ever elusive combination of having (#1) enough time, (#2) money, and the (#3) adequate space to work on it. Right now I'm servery lacking in #1 & #3, although I'm taking care of #3 very soon, I feel that it will result in severely lacking #2 for quite a while

Yeah, I noticed that too. Been telling you that for a while, even in one of the vids from 21 rd you can hear me telling you to get a front locker already. But you keep wheeling it and having fun taking it out like it is, so why not put the cash into your '82 build? You even going to finish that little truck?

Stealth 4x4 Better late than never I suppose... Here is a vid with some pics from early in the trip from last year and some video footage from the lower to middle portion of 21 Road. Once it got technical and started raining when we got to the upper portion of the trail my videographer stayed in the truck.

http://youtu.be/9OjeI1SIj2Y

There's more footage to go through... mostly from Holy Cross and Carnage.

Not exactly as planed, but still a great trip nonetheless. Can’t wait to go back and hit the stuff I missed.

I feared taking the high left line and taking out my a-pillar since I drive to/from trail and really need my glass.

I'd like to run this a few more times and figure out better lines thru the v-notch and squeeze for my truck. But it's kind of hard to find people to run with that I wouldn't slow down.
I'll run it with you again Doug...and that might be sooner than you think
