05 Tacoma Crew Cab \ double cab 4wd Automatic... no 4 banger?

Im just wondering why has the 4 banger gone away from this particular class of the pickup world? I know Nissan doesnt offer one with their Frontier (not sure if they ever had a 4 banger). For those that are interested in economy and gas savings, theres no option, unless you go down to a 2wd 2dr cab. I dont even think the domestics offer such an option.

WHY?

Is it because they feel the extra weight of crew cab with 4wd would stress a 4 cycl? I believe the older xtra cabs were available in the 4wd 4 cycl autos, so how much more weight would it be to go up to the crew cab? I would think with todays progress in engines, we could have a 4 cycl with more hp than those older trucks.

Any insight appreciated.

Thanks...

You can get an '05 Access Cab 4x4 2.7. It has 4 doors and much improved though not great rear seats. If you're looking for economy and milage, skip the automatic (~ $900 option). Actually, I don't think you can get that combo with the auto.

Yeha, Im not seeing it either. Wierd. Maybe its just not availible yet???

Having four doors on the extended cab is a smart move. At least for me. I rarely have anyone back there, but tossing crap in the back is much easier w/ the four door.

It's probably because Toyota didn't sell enough of them so it's not fiscally responsible for them to make it. That's how Toyota keeps making profits while GM, and Ford keep losing money. Unfortunatly for those that would buy a 4 banger D/Cab Toyota's in the business of making money.

You know it wasn't offered for 2001 -2004 Dcab 4x4s either.

All I can say is with the sluggish feel I had on the stock V6 with my Dcab, I wouldn't want a 4, but I know that doesn't answer your question. Maybe a search and comparing the weight of the different styles might give us a better idea as to why Toyota wouldn't offer it. My guess is the potential of the added weight of 5 adults and cargo while offroading is what they had concerns about.

I have personally seen a 2004 4cyl DCAB Auto. It was at a toyota used car lot becasue the owner traded it in for a 6cyl.

Personally I'm glad toyota doesn't make a Dcab Auto 4cyl 05.. It just gives the Tacoma a bad name.

Was it a 4x4? I've seen them as prerunners, but never 4x4.

I do agree with you on dcab 4cyl 05 though,... it is a good thing they don't sell them.

Dcabtaco, Im not getting the sluggish feel ? You must have had a cobra mustang or SS camaro befor the taco. My 04 D-cad V6 still will roast the tires off. I wouldn't know but my wife tells me so. :)
LOL, yeah actually I have owned 2 camaros a few years back. That latest one was an 86 350 4 barrel, 4 bolt main, bored out 30 over, with a modified Cam kit, LSD, and centerforce clutch. I could lift the front wheels off the ground breifly at take off. Damn I miss my camaro.

Well I went from that to a ricer Civic(economy but my DD). I must say even the civic felt like it had a little more pep than my stock DCab. Well at least when I was in it alone. Add some passangers on the civic and the weight just makes it feel like a yugo. Anyway, I just wasn't use to the heavier weight (Tacoma 3700 lbs, Civic 2200 lbs) The civic hp at the flywheel was around 150 with all the mods. The Tacoma HP at the flywheel was 190. Now I estimate about 275 at the flywheel, much better with the SC. Oh and another reason for the sluggish feel was I wouldn't step on it when I first got it since I was breaking it in. At about 5k-6k I installed the SC and was a little heavier on the pedel :D However on hills and the stock V6 I was being passed in the tacoma when in the little 4 banger civic I was the one passing. Now I could just hear the gas being sucked out of the tank as I climb the hills.
