I Have 05 Double Cab, Long Bed, V6, Automatic, 800 Miles, Etc. Since New, A Ticking Noise Consistant With Rpm's Is Heard Primarily When In 2nd And 3rd Gear. The Noise Is Best Heard When Driving Mrs. Daisy. If U Get On The Gas , The Engine Overcomes The Ticking. One Dealer Claims To Not Hear It. Another Hears It And Is Speaking To Toyota Currently, But I've Heard No Response For 8 Days Now. The Noise Is Loudest When Driving Cold. Ticking is heard inside and out of cab. I Need Answers.........now!!!! Can Anyone Help???? Are you running a lower grade fuel? I know they recommend 91 octane.

eric had me over to verify that he was hearing something and it wasn't just his imagination
I concurred that there is indeed a sound, when the truck is idling and when you drive it you can hear it under acceleration
it is sort of a wow/flutter sound, moreso than a ticking sound
I drove his truck for a few miles and was surprised at hom smooth the truck drove, it has been many years since I drove a new tacoma, especially a 4.0 V-6
I am not sure it is a seriously bad noise or just a quirk of a new engine design

The ticking gets much quieter as it breaks in. Doesn't go away completely by any means. It is much more noticable in cold weather too. I'm at 5600 miles and it still ticks some and I too use premium and synthetic oil.

Spend $10-15 and go to a parts store and buy a mechanics Stethoscope and place in on different locations around the engine. Warning the noise can be very loud. If you find a general area then move around that locations to zero in better. More then likely you are just hearing valve train clatter and it will decrease as the engine breaks in. If you seem to isolate it to the bottom of the engine then drain the oil early say 1000 miles or even 500 and send in an oil sample. Cut open the oil filter carefull so as not to contaminate the inside and unfold the pletes looking for metal fragments.

This has been a common issue brought up in the forum here. Most 05's Taco's and 4L 4Runners have the problem. I've got 6,500K on mine and it's real prevalent at low RPM's. In my own opinion I think it has something to do with the VVTI causing the valvetrain chatter. At first I thought it was gas and ran premium for months but that never helped. My best advice is to save some coin by running regular gas in it because it doesn't make an audible or even power difference running premium.
