I have a 2005 6 cylinder Toyota 4runner with 88k miles. Recently, the vehicle will either shake or make a loud clanging sound or do neither, intermittently. It seems to be getting worse and the clanging sound is not noticeable above 30 mph. The sound and shaking seems to be coming from the rear drivers side. I thought the problem might be with the brakes (a stuck caliper), but the mechanic assures me that all is well with the brakes. The rear brakes had a complete replacement (calipers, pads, shoes) a year ago when the brake lines apparently burst (or so I was told). The car is not pulling to either side, and I am not noticing any issues before or after braking. I read somewhere that is the caliper shims were not installed which are specific to the 4runner, this could cause an intermittent problem. I am also thinking this could be a 4 wheel drive problem but there are no warning lights or check engine codes being displayed.
