2005 Taco paint chipping

2165 Views 16 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Shibumi
I just got the 05 and although it is a great ride, etc., I just noticed that I have paint chipping just in front of the rear left tire.
It is the metal of the wheel well on the outside. I had driven through slush and snow, but nothing that I believe would mess it up. It is BRAND NEW!!
What can be done? Is this something to exspect in the future?
I called the dealership and they said to bring it by and they will determine a solution.
Thanks for any help in this...

Take it to the dealer and see what they say...
Definitely take it back to the dealer, that should be a warranty issue.
Definitly take it back to the dealer. The warrenty will cover it.

Same here. It really shows in the indigo ink blue color. Do you have the sport bucket seats? If you do, have you had any problems with them not moving easy or at all? I cant get mine drivers side toslide foward or back because the pin does not pull out far enough when I pull the lever. My pass sid seat is just a pain to move easy.
Just one more reason to stay away from those spankin' new trucks...
Take it to the dealer! You also need them to check for recalls on the paint.

Driving in the slush and snow will cause a bit of paint damage. If the slush is constantly hitting the paint, like on the way back from tahoe, there will be paint damage. Good luck with the dealer repainting something that YOU did.

:xcrybaby:
how bout my new 04 with paint chipping from a gravel ding? it's under warranty, too. do they cover that type of thing?
Halfxspaid,
Interesting point! With that in mind I thought back to the times when i wheeled my 02 through heavy mud, sand, gravel, and never had any issues with paint coming off.
After checking with a Fleet Manager at another dealer down south, his first reaction was, "Sounds like a paint defect...Its under warranty for 5 years.."

As far as the seats, no probs, no exhaust issues, but they will be looking at it tomorrow. I guess they are very interested in rectifying the issue, especially when they want a good rating on their CSI (Customer Service Index) survey.
If the paint cant stand up to slush on the road, then what will happen with sand, and mud?
Is it from the front tires kciking up stuff back there? I guess the front mud flaps aren't doing their job?
Matt,
The area of paint chipping is the front left corner of the bed, right where it meets the cab on the left side.
It is not in a splash area from the front tire, or rear. Its a bit odd actually, but there regardless. It has nothing to do with the mudflaps. They work fine... :)

Oh, OK. Guess I had the wrong spot in mind when you said right in front of the wheel well.

I hope they hook you up!

The flares on my '03 looked like a dog was chewing on them from the front tires throwing shit on them.

But that has nothing to do with being a new truck...
UPDATE:
Took it into dealer nice and early and the paint claim suits were there with a digital camera, electronic paint depth gauge and cell phones.
The consensus is that one of the many flakes or chips (Two high on door) is a welding tick. That would explain that. The lower damage they couldnt seem to have an answer for.
He also went on to say not sure how they would handle this, but wanted to make it right. They offered a paint job for the lower area, and running boards to protect the area. No thanks, Toyotas dont need that to protect paint.
Besides, Ill be getting the Demello side bars anyway.. Great! Since this one has cancer of the paint in less than 500 miles, time for a replacement!
I guess you are supposed to be able to drive them off road and in snowy conditions after all... :D
In the same boat

I notice that on the drivers door to the right of "Tacoma" chrome stuff I have a paint chip. :( Its only a month old
Update

1. I took the truck into dealership today, and they will be painting the ENTIRE
truck. At first the dealership tried to low ball me with painting only the sides, but that not good enough.

2. The leak in the weld seam caused a large amount of leaking in the drivers side. The service mgr. knew exactly what the problem was when I described it. They will be fixing that as well. The carpet will also be replaced, completely.

3. On examination of the exterior, I found a flaking of the chrome on the front grill. This too shall be completely replaced.

4. I got a 05 Tacoma exactly like mine, for the duration of the repairs.
This dealership is addressing the problems, but its still to be seen how well it turns out. If your not happy with your truck, especially an 05, raise hell and demand satisfaction from them. You would be amazed what can happen when you get the Service Mgr., the General Mgr. and Toyota Corporate involved.
Halfsxpaid,
Thanks for wishing me Good Luck! It paid off....
