I have a 98 V6 4runner but its only 2wd, are their alot of 2wd 4runner's out there that go offroading? I know theres tons of 2wd tacoma prerunner's offroading, but when I see a 4runner its always 4wd! So is the 2wd 4runner worth the time or should i just keep it on the street?

I don't see any reason it can't be made into a capable off road ride. Alittle suspension work, and especially traction....good tires, and possibly a limited slip or locker, you will go all over the place, and have a good time.

I'd say dont give up so easy. With a locker, a tow strap, and some good friends you can have lots of fun with your 2wd 4Runner. Just keep in mind your trucks abilities and dont let anyone talk you too far in.
We have Pre-Runners run on trips with us alot, when the trail gets too much we have them park and they assist with spotting and other trail chores. Who knows you may enjoy wheeling so much you end up modding the truck into a 4wd or selling it to buy one.

They make 2wd 4Runners?? I still to this day, do not understand why people won't go the couple extra thousand bucks to get the 4wd...unless you desert race or whatever..fine....

I would say it prob isnt worth upgrading much -you will have an awesome looking rig that will get passed by a 1984 subaru wagon on the way up to Tahoe in the winter - 2WD limits you in alot of situations - then again you could make it quite a capable truck; but then you would always have those situations where a 2WD just wont cut it.

I know, I know, the sad thing is that this is my 2nd mistake. Previous to this 4runner(almost 2 years ago), I had a 2wd, 4 banger, 2.7L tacoma prerunner... did a little suspension, removed the elbow mod., installed exhaust and called it a day. Still, I was not happy, the V6 was still waaaaay more powerful. Though, with all the off-roading I did, surprisingly I never got stuck, I just never let-off the gas in unsafe(soft/sandy) areas... but I always wished for a damm V6. I finally got that 3.4L V6 but in a shape of a 4runner! I guess its just one of those things where you always want what you don't have! So now i'm just trying to work with what i have, knowing that I can't put too much into it, unless I just go ahead and do the convertion to 4wd!

Yeah, 2wd suck at offroad. Terrible Herbst 's TRUGGY is only 2wd. And, it is old..... Suck its' ASS, trophy trucks!!!! Don't kid yourself, this ride will do fine, just build it some, and go have fun. And SCREW the fools who pooh pooh you on having a "handicapped " truck. I'm not saying to go rock crawling, or total mud pit work, but for the trail, with a good limited slip or locker, you are gonna get through. Hell, with enough balls and skinny pedal, you will just about get through anyway...

I've got a 97 2wd with a downey 3" on the back and a doichtech 3" coil over on the front, 31" tires prerunner bar and skid plate, exhaust, intake mod etc etc. The thing is great for desert use and I have brought it out on some moderate trails. Definitly cant mud or crawl with it but for moderate use and out in the desert it works just fine.
