I think I'm posting in the right area, sorry if it's not.

My dad had bought a 96 limited a few months ago. It had a lack of power but we have had many 3rd gens and usually we replace the cat, fuel filter, spark plugs, and do a tune up and it's good. Well it helped but eventually it developed an idle as if it were cammed. No vacuum leaks. It has a loud clattering above 3500rpm. We put a cold air intake on it just for sound with an exhaust. Instead of buying a new engine or heads he bought a 97 SR5. Now when we swapped the intake to the known good engine, you can hardly hear it. Much much quiter on this 3.4...could that indicate burn intake valves on the tired motor? If the intake valves weren't closing all the way you would hear combustion thru the intake right? Also if you let the tired motor idle for a while it throws a lean code, but no misfire codes. thoughts from the Toyota masters?

BTW the 96 with the tired motor is for sale $3000, 4wd w/ locker 230k, new bilsteins and tires. In Arizona if anyone is interested lol.
