before all of you harass me, i know this has been up many times. i have a 96 with 2.7 engine, manual tranny, and the gear ratios are 3.58 (i am almost 100% sure, i know they aren't 4.10s. anyways, do you think i can pull 33s with my truck. i have little ass 235/75 r 15 tires on there now, and when i put it in 5th, i have the smallest amount of acceleration. if not 33's, what about 32 or 31s? anyone with a 96 reg cab, 2.7, manual, with 33's, 32's, or 31's? if so, how does it do, and what kind of gas mileage do you get??

Most people will tell you the same thing: It can be done, but it won't be fun. 32's would be a little better, and 31's would be very little difference. According to other posts, 5th gear becomes pretty useless with 33's.

I run 32's on my 2.7 auto, and don't have any power issues. If size isn't that important, Stick to 32. Of course there will always be someone that comes on and tells me I'm an idiot...

On another note, how/where did you mount your amp? I'm about 3/4 the way throuth dynamatting the entire cab, and need to get some ideas on mounting the amp. My seats are 2 custom seats, so there's room behind the seats.

No i would agree that 33's would give you absolultley no 5th gear.... Also the RPMs you would be running to get up to speed would be rediculous. I have a 98 2.7l with 32's and i have no issue with power. I mean yea gas milage sucks... but o well its worth it :D

Well, I had 4:10s on my old 4runner (man trans) and 33s, but you may be able to get by (depends on how you drive) with some 33x1050s ATs. Something with little resistance. I say depending on how you drive because I couldnt do 90 with them 33s easly, but I could be at 65 with no problems. Hills were another issue though, but I had that problem because of weight, power, and other issues of an 100HP engine. I always had an issue with hills. And going from Austin to san antonio, mostly flat, going 65 I could get 25-30 mpg. The issue with going to bigger tires is that you have to have your speedo recalibrated, or know how to compinsate in your mind.

thanks for all the help, all the honest help. i can't stand it when someone would steer another person in the wrong direction, when they know it can't be done. i know with 4.10s, most people can, but i didn't know how much of a differece it would be with 3.58s. thanks a lot.

as for the amp, it is under my amp, between my seats, pointin from front to back. if you look on page three of my cardomain site, you can kind of see the side of the amp, with the wires poking out. i pushed it back, and it is wedged under the speaker. good luck. if you want, i can take a picture and email it to you.

My 98 2.7l 5spd came w/4.10's stock, i ran 32's for a while w/that gearing then bumped up to 33x12.5's and geared it to 4.88. Best money I've ever spent. I have excellent power around town and can easily maintain 70-80 on the highway w/o losing speed. Now i do sit at like 3k on the tach however while on the highway but that puts me back in the powerband.

I have had two Tacomas close to yours:

1) '97 reg cab 2.7 5 speed, 31x10.5 and 3.42's, slow, but manageable w/ 31's

2) my current '97 xtracab 2.7 5 speed, 31x10.5 and 3.58's, I do just fine with 3.58's and 31's, but if I went to 32's on these gears, it would be too much. I'm getting 33x10.5's soon and will regear to 4.88's. It will have to be done. I currently have plenty of power and can cruise at 80-85 max, no uphills in 5 gear, but on the flat it is just fine. Around town is fine too. But 33's and 3.58's will be insane. I'm going to try it right before I get my gears, just to see how bad it is.

Depending on you VIN, you may have to look at the last graph, right before "Differential Types". I did, because my truck appears to be more american made, also it says anything with 4TXXXXX but 5Txxxxxx should work also. Mine starts with 5Txxxxxx.

Aparently I thought I had 3.somethingorothers and I indeed have 4.10s No wonder my RPMS always seemed high on the freeway.

I run 33's on my truck, stock 4:30 gears, 5 Speed and with using the heat (winter time) almost everyday I still get between 275-300 miles on a tank, but I drive around a lot too so that could have a factor in MPG. :D I love driving my Tacoma

When I got it, April of last year, In summer I got 400-450 miles on a tank back when my truck was totally stock on 31's

2000 tacoma 4x4 2.7L auto with 33" bfg muds, I can do 75+ mph on the flat frwy no problem, I just returned from west tx area, a few hills around there, it wasn`t to bad, if I lived up north a gear change might be in the works. I had a 97 tacoma 2.7L manual 4x4 with 31" tires, I could smoke em(the tires), it was pretty quick, much more so than my 2000 when it had 31"s, I believe my 97 toy would have been more receptive than my 2000 toy with the 33"s, JMO.

thanks a lot guys. that really helps me out. i think i am just gonna get some 31/10.50s. they aren't too small, not to big either, but imo they look pretty good on tacos. i am gettin about 19 mpg with my 235/75s. most, of the time, your gas milleage goes down with bigger tires, but could i be winding out my engine to much? that brings up another question, i usually shift my truck to the next gear under, or right at 2500 rpms. is that about right?? or do yall go to about 3000 or 3500? i would go higher, but it sounds like it is gonna blow up. lol. since i shift that low, would my mpg go up, if i up my rpms?? what i mean is, am i luggin my engine to much?? thanks for all the help.

You'll be fine w/ 31's and 3.58's, its what i have, if you go to a 33x1050 youll want a 430 or 456 gear if 33x1250 definately a 456 :)
