I have just purchased an '04 Tacoma with 4WD (button/lever type), ADD and auto xmission
Two Questions:1) When shifting from 4H to 4L or 4L to 4H with the car stopped and xmission in neutral, there is a grinding of the gears. Once in gear everything is OK. Is this normal? I'm afraid of damageing the xfer case over time. 2) I have read it's not wise to drive in 4WD on dry hard pavment yet my owners manual states the truck should be drive in 4WD at least 10 miles a month but doesn't say anything about the type of pavment. Who is correct?
Thanks.

With the engine running if I don't shift from 4H to 4L quick enough, mine will grind. Solution for me - shift quicker or shut the motor off if I don't.

I had this same problem with my 04 V6/auto. I found that if I shifted into "P", gave it a 4 count, and then went from H->L or L->H, no grind.
