Vehicle working on : •1996 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, California smog compliant, 2.7 - 3RZFE distributor type ignition with A/C and manual transmission. 350,000 miles.
• My goal is to remove the 1996 - 3RZFE and replace with a 2000 - 3RZFE.
• My question is, "Can I use the distributor type - 1996 - 3RZ FE cylinder head, and all its attached components including valve train. And swap (install) the 1996 cylender head onto a coil pack ignition type - 2000 - 3RZ FE engine block?
•If a 1996 head will line up and bolt onto a 2000 block, are there any conversions or modifications necessary? Any for smog compliance? Will the timing chain and cam shaft alignment be the same?
• Note : using a new timing chain and the head will be rebuilt before installing.
Thank you for any help and advice

Bottom end is the same. Its the top end that changed. You are better off swapping everything over from the 2000 engione assuming you have the ECM, harness, complete intake, etc. Its more involved, but the newer design is worth the effort if you have the skills. Otherwise no issues with swapping heads.
