I bought one from Wal-Mart. It's a 30 ft'er.... with a max load of 5,333 lbs. I have not used it yet, but I'm sure It will work fine when I need it. Anyone else got this???
You're going to break it and kill someone the first time you use it. The minimum is around 20000lbs.

I sure hope no one else gets that thing for offroad recovery-
Get rid of it ASAP - replace it with something safer

No.... No.... No.... It says 30,000lbs. At the bottom it says something like Max vehicle weight should not be over 5,333lbs. I don't have it right in front of me... so don't quote quote me too much on that. I'll look at it later.

Ebay is the place to get em. Look up "recovery sling" and look for the blue straps. I bought two about a year ago for less than $20 shipped!!!! and they are bad ass. You just have to watch and be patient to get them cheap. They are 3in wide and 15ft long I know that seems short but I just put them together. They're rated at 30K lbs. The straps are used but, trust me, they are great! I am by no means easy on straps. I broke a 20K lb strap on an 18 wheeler with my 1977 Bronco!!! I havent managed to break these yet. Let me know what you think.

who makes a good strap? And what size do you think would be best and rating?
-You could look into local places that sell industrial lifting straps -
Same thing - often cheaper too

I might be selling one of these- but shipping would probably kill the deal

Well you can always double them over to accomidate a recovery that requires a shorter strap but it's kinda hard to make up the length you don't have. I have on occasion used both of my 30's end to end for a single recovery. Now 6" wide may indeed be excessive but they do tend to wear from use so it's nice to have some built in safety margin so maybe it's not. I've used the 4" staps I have many times and have repaired one of them a few times now.

I get mine made at a place call Matex in Shreveport. A 35 foot, 3" inch 40,000 lb strap will cost around 40 bucks. and they will ship as well.

If it has metal hooks at the ends DONT USE IT!!!!!!!!!! I 've seen the walmart ones(I even have one, but never use it for off road recovery) I put it side by side with my 3" 30' Pro Comp and I laugh at the difference.

I have been running a 30ft 20,000 Pro comp with no problems yet. I have used it several times between 2 fullsizes that were yanking pretty hard it, it was no sweat for it. The only problem is the leather wrapping the end loops is cracking off.

Wicked One - read these as they give a good background as to why you want to not just by a cheap or readily available strap. A poorly choosen and/or used strap can be very dangerous...

And:

P.S.... I don't endorse that particular brand of straps, I just think the chart puts across the point of how much force a strap needs to handle quite well. ;)

Well I went to a hardware store and got a really big sail makers needle. I also got some leather from an old purse and cut some strips out of it. One strip is the width of the loop portion and the other is wider and wide enough to fold back around to cover the other side and narrow leather strip. Having leather coverage on the loop adds a lot to wear durability. Get some heavy duty nylon string or Kevlar to sew with. Pushing that big needle through the leather and the nylon is kinda hard on the fingers so you will want to wear some light weight leather gloves. It's gonna take some time and patience so it's good to be watching TV or something.
In the actual loop part you want to put a C fold in the strap and put a few tack stitches in it to hold it in place. In addition to the allowance for the loop you will want at least 10" or so of strap fold back allowance to close the loop. That is where the free end overlays the strap thus forming the loop. First sew the leather to the C folded portion stitching the leather and nylon together. That is the actual loop part. Double stitch it up both sides. Now fold the loop over and make several strings of stitches spaced out across the width of the strap and whip the edges together too.
