The vehicle in question is in the sig...yes I know its not 4x4 but same principles apply. When the trans is in neutral and rear end is either jacked up from the pumpkin or not jacked at all I go under the truck and rotate the driveshaft (as the engine would to move vehicle) but there is about 1.5" of rotation before the ring and pinion mesh.

That is measured at the driveshaft, about 1.5" of rotation between Coast and Drive or Power side of gears.

Now gears are aftermarket installed by 4x4parts wholesalers about 2.5 or 3years ago. I am pretty sure it has been like this since the install but at the time I knew verry little about my truck as that was basically my first mod.

If you're with me still the symptoms are jerking say on acceleration from a stop (and yes i know how to drive a stick propery) More noticeable in first cruising around a parking lot (get on gas slightly and then off all the way and truck seems to jerk back and forth (seemingly to me on that 1.5" or so slop in the driveline.

If prob is the gears can they be re shimmed or what? I am not about to open it up to take a look cause I'm not sure what to look for.

any ideas?

Don't even bother trying to put a *bandaid* on that......

Sounds like the gears weren't installed properly (by 4x4parts wholesalers) and you're experiencing classic gear wear from an improper gear installation.

You're better off taking the truck to someone else and getting new gears installed.

That's my .02 anyway.

That is driveline slop and not gear backlash. What you are mostly concerned with the gears is the backlash between the pinion and the ring gear. Unless you can feel the contact and know what to look for, its really hard to isolate that from the driveline slop. Besides, if you did have that much backlash in your gears, they would have grenaded by now.

For future note, rotation is usually measured as degrees, and not inches. What kind of reference does 1.5" of rotation tell us? Not much.

What you describe sounds close to the amount of play I have on my truck, but I also have a No-Slip locker.
