Sad day today. While working on the truck a month or so ago found a nasty little spot of really bad rust eating its way from the inside out of the passenger side rear frame by the front leaf spring perch shock mount area. Cleaned it up and slopped por 15 in there to try and slow the cancer but noticed a blister forming on the outside not to long ago. Made an appt with the local dealer ship because the blister was a real thin spot could push my finger nail through it. They told me it qualifies for the buy back and the paperwork has been started. Not sure what there going to give me but my plan is to find an 01-04 same truck as I have and swap all of my parts onto it. The exception being my wheels and tires I will have to sell because they are 15". I am slightly entertaining the idea of a double cab but am not a fan of the short bed and auto trans, but a kid is not to far off. Also my cap would not fit a double. So the saga continues and any input is appreciated. What a shame you guys know how clean and well maintained my truck is too. Hopefully they cut me a fat check.

You'll get 1.5 kbb excellent so probably around 12k. If you can get the replacement vehicle ahead of time to simply swap parts between the two truck, that would be the easiest. Have a little party and we could get things swapped over in no time.

Good luck, it is a pretty easy process.

They only swap frames on the 01-04 tacos. Ill report back on how it works out. I am in the process of searching for a clean 01-04 hopefully from somewhere down south.

Well after the boss (wife- pregnant) found out about the news it looks like a double cab is going to be my next taco. How do the auto transmissions hold up? I like to shift gears not to stoked for an auto what should i expect with a double cab compared to my truck with gearing etc.?

Your wheels and tires should fit. Might just need to grind the calipers some

I liked the auto in my last tacoma 100x better than the 5speed in my current one. They are a very good trans. Mine 230k + on it when I totaled it and it was still in great working order.

in my 5 years as a tech at a toyota dealer i may have seen 1 or 2 of those transmissions bad and most likely that was because of lack of service.. dont be scaredof those autos they are great transmissions..but i am like you i would rather a 5 speed also.. d-cabs look sweet lifted too:D

Do yourself a favor. Get some crusher parts. Like a old toy axle and junk wheels and tires. Have a list of aftermarket parts your keeping and make sure it's ok to keep em. Keep the front diff driveshaft rear axle(say you regeard them) locker wire harnes bumpers wheels and tires rear shocks fender flares lift stuff. I also kept my cvs manual hubs tail lights optima battery radio airbox gas tank skid and swaybar.

Find a place for working and storing parts until you sell or use them.

Don't rule out a 96-02 4runner either. If you like them that is. Most of your stuff will swap to them.

I wonder if they will give you a hard time about the missing IFS
Doubt it since they had no issue doing the buy back from Eric up in New England. He had a leaf spring Dana 44 setup under his.

The guy at the dealorship had me list EVERYTHING I added to the truck down to the seat covers, floor mats, and hurst shifter. He said the price wil be negotiated with the aftermarket stuff figured in. He then said I will be able to keep anything i want off of the truck. My friends garage is less than a mile from the dealorship so I will certainaly canibalize the hell out of the truck and drag or tow whats left to the dealor. Thanks for the input on the auto, no more fried clutch smell on the trail at least.

Fishbone, you should have no problem getting them to buy it back the spot that is rusted through is litterally a millimeter sized fingernail hole. They want these trucks off the road.

When I got home yesterday, I had a letter from toyota in my mailbox. It's the one telling me to have my trucks frame checked out at the dealer!!!

It's a sign!

your frame is fine.. you would be heart broken to cut your truck up.. i suggest unless you want your truck gone don't take it to the dealer if they find it to be bad there is no stopping the process.. i would patch that shit untill their wasnt a frame left...lol unless you want a new project
