Hey all,

Well neither my old '97 or my current '02 came with antilock brakes.... WTF?! I thought this was supposed to be standard equipment in this day and age.

Anyway, I'd love to have them, but am wondering just what it would cost in parts and if it's even possible. Anybody out there that has made this mod?

Thanks in advance,

Beave

Yeah, but the only time I'd worry about it as far as "control", would be when I'm 4LO'n it. In which case it would be automatically disengaged. I'd love to be able to "stomp-and-steer" on the highway and not worry about locking em' up or spinning out.

My '02 regular-cab does not have ABS. I think Tacos came standard with ABS beginning in '03.

There are lots of parts you'd need, but you could probably do it.
Probably master cylinder, all the tubing to the ABS valves, the abs valves, abs ECU, then ABS equiped spindles and rear axle, along with the wiring for all of it. Basically it's a lot of work, which is going to cost you heaps of money. Unless you find a wrecked truck with most of stuff you are looking for intact...

ABS sucks man, particilarly on a truck. It takes away control from the driver.
Takes away control from the driver when you are going 80 on the freeway and are too busy to think about pulsing the pedal yourself as you are trying to not colide with any number of car in front of you.

Our trucks ABS is slightly hindered due to the fact that we only one line go to TWO rear brakes.. So it takes both tires to lock before ABS will do anything. That is the only downside to ABS on our trucks.

I have a thread on how to convert ABS to non ABS, never heard of someone actually wanting to convert the other way, maybe we should trade some parts!! You will have to change alot of stuff to do the ABS conversion.

If you're a driver capable of not needing ABS, threshold braking comes entirely as a reflex. There's no thought involved. I'm not claiming I can do it as a reflex. Just ya know, if you can do it, and you really can, it's a reflex.

yeah, no understood.. I had stood on the brakes a couple of times on the free way and have had one of the back tires lock up (stupid single line rear ABS) at which point I had to modulate the pedal, but you are right, it is a reflex.

I've wanted to do the same conversion but don't want to spend that kind of money. I have an 02 without ABS.. I was looking for an 03 (03's were the first year to be standard) and bought the 02 because of it being a leftover.. I did plenty of research on the 03 and didn't realize the 02 didn't come standard.. Found out during hte first snow storm.. lol..

I wish I had ABS because I tow 2 snowmobiles on a trailer.. 1800lbs pushing your truck forward in the snow when trying to stop.... tend to lock up quite easily and slide.. Truck alone.. I can deal without it..
