So i pulled into my local autozone here in liberal shit head california to get my CEL read to me as it has been blinking at me sometimes and what do I learn? That ANYWHERE ELSE ON THIS CONTINENT EXCEPT CALIFORNIA they can read my light but not here. The goddamn labor union or mechanics union or whatever got the Bearu of Automotive Repair to pass a LAW saying that Autozone CAN NOT read CEL lights. And why is this? Because i live in a fucking socialist state ran by a bunch of pushovers and communists who agreed that the poor little mechanics shops were loosing money by offering this service. Poor little mechanics, cant compete in a free market society.

Anyways now that my anti left/socialist/communist rant has run its course, anybody know of some other tricks to read the code out of a 99tacoma? I mean besides purchasing a reader. Or am I going to be forced to shell out the cash or simply drive to nevada?

That sucks...but I remember on my 96 - I used a wire to cross two ports in the diagnostics reader and got the codes. It's somewhere on the internet...

Ahhhh Found it!

Obviously, use this AT YOUR OWN RISK. I did this on my 96 - discovered it was an O2 sensor. However - there are two O2 sensors and it won't tell you which one. So ...it'll point you in the general direction atleast.

dont be jumping anything! that only works for obd-1, you have obd-2. you need to read the code with a scanner. autozone wont do it for you anymore, but they will loan you out the code reader and you can do it yourself. usually they ask for your drivers liscence to be sure you bring it back.

Tell us what you REALLY feel! :) Damn dude, I'm a card carrying dyed in the wool republican, and I agree with you. But this is not a polital forum. Buy the reader, leave the rest to Melanie morgan. :)

When I lived in San Diego (18 months ago) I used to go to my neighborhood Auto Zone, and borrow their code reader all the time. They never said anything except "sure - here you go."

I would suggest buying a code reader or scanner, though. The more you modify your truck, the more you'll need to troubleshoot CEL's.

I'd just buy one if they had that stupid law where I lived. I think you can get a crappy one that does nothing more than pull codes for like 60 bucks... or get a halfway decent one for like $130.

OBDII won't be going away anytime soon, so it's worth it if you plan to work on your own cars and stay situated in such a liberal area.

dude, chill.... ;)

go back to AZ, 'borrow' their reader (you pay for it, us it and then they give you your $ back)
then look up the codes in the FSM.

There's a group buy on FJCruiserforums for the Scangauge II... $149.95 shipped... deal is good til the end of the month.. vendor is Linear Logic... I got an extra cable so that I can leave the nicely routed one in the tacoma and still remove the thing to read codes on other vehicles...
