I have a Flowmaster 50DF and I chopped my exhaust where it was in the way of stuff. Sounds fine to me, although I was never really concerned about the sound, just needed it out of the way of the shackles.

when you cut it off it usually gets a little louder from reverberating (sp?) off the bottom of the truck

LOL I cut mine off then the rest of the muffler fell off, (flowmaster 40 series) turns out that muffler was a tad weak, so i stepped up to a spintech and have had no issues.

I cut off the exaust on my 98 reg cab 2.7L. right after the o2 sensor.I put on a 14 inch,$17 Turbo Muffler(probally much louder than a 50) about 6 inches after the sensor.I found that running it like this with NO tailpipe was a bit loud.I put a tailpipe on exiting out to the side, right before the rear tire and the sound was a LOT quiter than runnig it without a tailpipe. This is a temp. setup because I rather not do a complete exaust(headers, cat, etc.) in -17 F degree weather.I hope this helps you.

Check with your state laws. You could fail inspection if the pipe is cut off anywhere below the vehicle. In Texas, it must exit to the side or rear of the truck.

not meaning to sound like to much of a prick, but get your facts right.
the exhaust must not be cut off at or before the passenger compartment- (ie- cab of a truck). the exhaust MAY be cut off and dumped in a pickup bed because that is not considered a passenger compartment, UNLESS as in your case, if you have a camper.
