When I engage my rear locker and then reverse the truck it blows air out the breather. It only seems to do a little bit when I press the button moving forward but constantly and quite a bit of air in reverse. Any ideas?

It's out of the diff breather, I have it run inside the cab and smelled it while backing up the icy driveway tonight. I put my hand in front of the breather and drove forward and back while engaging/dis-engaging the locker. Must be the O-rings but it seems funny that it would only happen in reverse.

It does seem wierd, do you still have the stock breather cap on the end of the hose? If so I'd consider removing it to maintain zero pressure in the meantime.

And for the love of Pretty Rock, you better be carrying diff fluid with you tomorrow.

No breather cap on it, it's got a clear path.

I am bringing gear oil tomorrow though just in case. Open seat still if you change your mind.

I suppose it's time for me to post about the RD-89 problem.

Call Tim Lund @ ARB and give him a detailed description of what is happening. He will need the serial # and date purchased of the unit.

the problem:

When the unit is fully warmed up it doesn' leak or seldom does but when it cools down or you are wheeling in snow it leaks like crazy. The locker will still engage but the compressor constantly on drives you nuts.

There was a batch of under-spec internal pistons that wound up in some RD-89s as well as some D-44s (they use the same piston). If this is the problem on yours you can get a new piston kit from ARB.

Pm me for more details

Tim, If you catch this post please feel free to jump in! That is unless all that new found fame has gone to your head ;)

Tim sent me new seals/O-rings and I am just waiting to tear mine apart and have them replaced
the O-rings are NOT the problem, the interna piston is. you have to disassemble the top of the diff by removing all of the 12pt bolts to access the piston. the kit they send out includes new bolts as they are a one-time use item. Use red locktite on those bolts and torque to ARB's specs.

We took Mike's appart at Spider lake last summer on the Rubicon trip. notice the empty bolt holes, that's what needs to come off. Leave the ring gear and seal housing alone. the O-rings (in the seal housing) don't usually go bad unless you have gotten some sort of contamination in the oil.

If you have a shop do the work keep your reciept.
