Kicking around the idea of doing a manual tranny swap down the road. I only have 4500 miles on mine and simply HATE automatic trannies. Plus I tow often enough to want to be able to put it whatever gear I want and roll and not worry about over heating or something going wrong.

So what I am thinking off the top of my head would be. I did this on a 2nd gen PU a couple years ago, but they were much simpler.

  • 5 speed, clutch & flywheel out of a 2WD Tacoma (don't want or need 4WD or plan to do an SAS
  • Pedal assembly
  • Clutch master & slave cylinder, hard lines, etc.
  • Redo the crossmember I assume

One other thing is the computer thinking it still has an automatic. On the older ones it was a separate computer and could be removed without an issue. On the Tacomas I assume this is not the case.

Any idea on a way to get the CE light issue fixed? That would drive me nuts. Maybe run a computer for a manual trans if there is not a separte puter for the auto like in the older models.

Was it pretty straight forward? Any tips???

You can get the '05 with manual transmission, but you also get that Ford Explorer look. It's still cheaper to stick a manual tranny in there. Like this.
Nice work! Did you do a 4WD conversion or just planning on a future SAS?

Going to start looking into this more and more. Only thing I would want to do different is use a 2WD tranny and not mess with the tcase since I don't need it.

If I wanted 4WD I would have bought a 4WD. No reason to have one on a DD where I am. It might get used 1-2 times a year, but I can get by w/out it for sure.

The 05 does come with a Manual in EX and DC models they are at the stealerships here.
I looked at them Saturday. Prerunner DC's are not avilable with a manual, Acess cabs are however. Only had 3 Acess cab's, TRD, 4x4, manuals on the lot and man it that a ripper compared to the 3.4 IMO. Sure wish I would have waited....dealer sure wished I wanted to trade my 04 in already as well

Why do I need stronger when this V6 is the same V6 as in the 2WD's??? This will never be a wheeler or a SC'ed pavement pounder.

Plans are on hold anyway. Have to liquidate all my toys and debt so I can start a new life on my own. So I really have no reason to do this as I won't be towing anymore

Regear the rear axle and make up for that easy enough, if the 2WD tranny is geared that much differently.

My situation has changed a lot recently so no swap happening for me.
