Hey guys. I'm a proud new owner of a 99 Tacoma V6 Prerunner with a Auto Tranny. 85000 miles and it runs great.

As I'm new to Tacomas, I wouldnt know, but it just started making this jolt sometimes. It's only when I come to a stop and begin to move. Other than that, the tranny shifts perfecto.

I'll be switching out the Tranny fluid to Redline ATF Synthetic. How many quarts does the tranny take, and this is my first Auto tranny. Anything I should be cautous about, or just pull the drainplug and fill back up?

Thanks guys. Sorry in advance if it's been covered but I did do a search.

I am planning to do the oil cooler soon because I haul my dirtbike (nothing big) but in a couple months, I will tow a 18' boat 10 mins away from my brothers house.

How can axle wrap be corrected and how can I make sure that it is the problem?

It's not everytime that it does it, only once in a while. It's wierd. Even going from Reverse to Drive or vice versa, it gives a slight jolt.

Firts of all welcome to the family. Wheather you tacoma is new or used youll be glad you made the right choice. Now to you question, what you feel is called axel wrap caused by your rearend. What happens is that the axel twists alittle when you come to a complete stop or when you stomp on the gas. The only way to minimize it is eather add a track bar or a new leaf pack other than that its the nature of the beast. The whole tranny takes about 16-18 qrts total because most of it is in the tourque converter. When i flushed mine i bought 2 cases which i used 20 qrts worth. To flush it remove the cooler line going into the tranny and stick it into a gallon jug, start the truck up in park and repeat the process. For every gallon of fluid takes four qrts. Once the gallon is almost full turn the truck off and fill the pan with 4 qrts. Since your this far you might consider a tranny cooler as well. The bigger the better. Good luck.

So I shouldn't worry about the jolt, it's just freeplay in the drivetrain?

I'm not quite clear on the tranny fluid change. Do I start it and fill a galloin jug, then swap out the jug, and fill another one up till the process is done? Or do I keep adding fluid as I keep taking away fluid?

Boy do I need manual tranny. Just pull the plug, put the plug on, take out the fill plug and add fluid.

This isn't necessarily axle wrap. When I stop kinda hard before it warms up, the tranny seems to pop out of gear into neutral, I have to rev it up real quick, which will kick the tranny back into gear. I was concerned for awhile at first but it's like clockwork and only happens in the first 5 minutes the truck is in gear. It started happening around 90k, mine is also a 99 V6 auto.

That said, yours sounds more like axle wrap than my problem.

I notices that it only jolts when the back end lifts up a lot, ie, it does it really bad when i'm stopping downhill, or if I stop too fast.

If the trans revs up then catches suddenly, you might be REALLY low on trans fluid. mine did this when I was re-filling it, and was quite low. Filling 'er up fixed it.

I get a funny little ker-thump backwards when I stop unless I stop REALLY smoothly. Now I have a feeling it might be that axle wrap everyone's talking about. Acceleration doesn't seem to cause it (well, S/C not installed yet either!), but my rear leafs are pretty well worn and I have a shell in the back. It's more of a little bump rearwards when you stop- probably could be accounted for by the axle wrapping a bit then returning to forward position. If you do an ultra-smooth stop, it's not there.

Yeah, super smooth stops, it's not there, it's just when the back of the truck comes up from braking,. The more it comes up, the harder the jolt.

Do you guys think it could be the middle support bearing for the driveshaft?

mines does the exact same thing but only when i come to a quick stop and when i begin moving. Its starting to worry me thinking it might be a transmission problem...anybody else got some info on this?

It's axle wrap. Read oup on this thread.

Supposily, lifting the truck with a AAL in the rear helps solve this problem.

First post guys, but just wanted to mention that I have had that issue with my PreRunner from the day I took her home. Not familiar with the Axle wrap issue and most likely that is the cause, but just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one. I bought my truck with 18 miles on the Odometer back in May of 99, and it nothing major has come of it. HTH

yup, axle wrap is a massively common problem on tacos. I have it! If you have on 03 or 04, apparently they added an extra leaf to the OEM pack so axle wrap became less of a problem.. But for us with the older tacos.... either a new totoyota extra leaf pack or an aftermarket AAL will solve the problem, along with lots of new grease on the driveshaft tranny connector.

Not Axle Wrap!!

Drive Shaft Slip Spline Binding!!!!!!
Dylan, maybe you have some input on this, Ryan has been eating driveshafts on his truck like crazy!

Any ideas on what would cause it, ive already had him cycle the suspension and unbolt it at full bottom out and its got plunge left so its not like its binding up. but A few weeks ago in glamis we had to pull it off and there was like a crap load of metal shavings and the splines were all chewed to hell! What woudl cause it? BTW its lewis's Truck im talking about ( 3link)
