I am looking at a 4runner to get its Rear E Locking thrid. The Axle Code is A04A. From searches, I am finding that it could be a 4:56 (brian894x4's site) and from off-road.com it says this is a 4:30. Does anyone know which code A04A or B04A is a 4:56?

This is off my home chapter's mod page, which is actually from TTORA Faq page which is now under construction.

This chart was taken from the http://www.tacomaterritory.com FAQ section.

First digit:
A = 7.5" ring gear
B = 8" ring gear
Next two digits: 01 = 3:42
02 = 3:58
03 = 4:10
04 = 4:56
05 = 3:15
06 = 3:91

Last digit:
A = 2 Pinion, Open
B = 4 Pinion, Open
C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip

Submitted by David Hale

Using the above codes would result in the following axle codes:

B01A 3.42 2 pinion open 7.5" ring gear
B01B 3.42 4 pinion open 8" ring gear
B01C 3.42 2 pinion posi (OEM limited slip)

B02A 3.58 2 pinion open 7.5" ring gear
B02B 3.58 4 pinion open 8" ring gear
B02C 3.58 2 pinion posi

BO3A 4.10 2 pinion open 7.5" ring gear
BO3B 4.10 4 pinion open 8" ring gear
BO3C 4.10 2 pinion posi

B04A 4.56 2 pinion open 7.5" ring gear
B04B 4.56 4 pinion open 8" ring gear
B04C 4.56 2 pinion posi

B05A 3.15 2 pinion open 7.5" ring gear
B05B 3.15 4 pinion open 8" ring gear
B05C 3.15 2 pinion posi

B06A 3.91 2 pinion open 7.5" ring gear
B06B 3.91 4 pinion open 8" ring gear
B06C 3.91 2 pinion posi

Note: The following has not been verified:
BO7A 4.56 ? 2 pinion open
3.42 (automatic) ? 2 pinion open
3.91 (manual) ? 2 pinion open

Thanks for the information. Will confirm later today. What is odd and this is the conflicting part. My wife has a 1999 4runner that we bought new and ordered 4:30 gears. The door sticker shows A04A as the code. I am pulling the 3rd out of the wrecked one later and will confirm its gears. Thanks.

I think the first part of the decoding is definitely correct, but my B06A is an 8" ring (well, 210mm or 8.4), not a 7.5. From what I've gathered here, no Tacomas had a 7.5" ring gear in the rear.

I think all the axle codes that are decoded in that list should have the 8" ring gear.

Yeah, somethin's not right

in many of those codes, either the first "B" needs to be changed to an "A", or the 7.5 needs to be changed to an 8.

But it's still really good info.

Minis (2.4L) have the 7.5" rear

That list is a bit conflicting. My axle code is B06A.
According to the "first digit" I have an 8" ring gear.
According to the axle code further down the list I have a 3.91/ 2 pinion open/ 7.5" ring gear. :eek:

this is why just going by the varrious charts that are floating around doesn't always work. the guy who was running the NE site had done a nice revised chart that fixed a lot of the goofs but that site is no longer up. :(

you have a v6 so you only get two choices for gears, 3.91 (usually with the 5-sp) or 4.10s (ATs or all TRDs) I assume you don't have 3.15s since they came of some early trucks with 205 size tires that were spring-under.

Also, all 4x4s and Prerunners have either the TRD, 200mm (8") or the non-TRD 210mm (commonly called the 8.4").

all Tacoma (up to '04) 4x4s have a 7.5" front diff.

I printed off a a copy of that chart from the NE site a good while back. He may have updated it after I printed it off. Still great info.
