I was taking an axle apart to get to it re-geared, and noticed something fell out. It was a part of the oil deflector in side the axle. Seeing that it fell apart, it could happen again. I'd hate to ruin some gears if it decides to break again. How useful is the oil deflector in the axle?

Is this from the rear? The deflectors are needed to get the oil up to the front pinion bearings so they don't run dry. Got a pic of the part you are referring to?
