Looks like it's time to get a new engine for the 85 4Runner. Any suggestions between LC Engineering, DOA Racing, or any other engines out there? It's still a daily driver (with over 300,000 on it) so the engine has to be dependable for daily driving as well as off road climbs.

My friend has an engine that was built by DOA. It was fine for 20k miles, but now he has some major work to do on it since whatever mods they did complicated things and he now has to re-work everything. He now tells people to stay away from DOA.
What I can recommend is ATK Engines. My roommate bought a reman 22RE from them. It was $1795 for the engine, but it was complete with gaskets and all that stuff. Its been running great ever since the swap.

I've read some bad things about DOA on www.t4x4pickup.com in the past.

Anyone ever experience the raw 150+ HP of the rock crawler engine? I'm thinking that the torque might be in all the right places for the 4Runner but I'm worried about reliability. The ATK engines are looking better and better as I consider the LC engines lifetime.

Thanks to everyone who responded. He ended up going with an LC Engineering long block since he's got the cash to burn. Now comes the fun of putting this thing in!
