will a high pinion 44 with 8 lug outers, chromo shafts, ctms hold up with 38-39s? Problems with hubs?

i got my axle pretty beef up, and i still would go bigger than 37's, some people run 38s on a stock d44 , but they might not wheel too much, its all depends, and its all up to you.

John down in VA Beach has been running my old 44 with Warn shafts and high quality joint in it and has still been having problems. He's running 38 TSL SX's on it with a dual Tcase...

Myself on the other hand, I traded up to Dana 60 and with 38's and lots of abuse I have yet to break any 60 parts...the 60's make a lot of strength difference.

If you have any axle questions feel free to drop me a line at [email protected]

I have 39" Irocks with a D44. All I have is warn shafts, I don't even have ctms and do not have much problems. I wheel my buggy pretty hard too. I think the reason it has lasted so long is because I have an ARB up front. I try to disengage it when ever I am cranking on the wheels. The one thing I keep having problems with is the hubs, I do break those. By the way I have dual cases with 4.7's in the rear case also.

thats what i run, but i run IROK's and they are a very light tire which i think is why mine has held together after ditching lockouts for drive flanges. In reality i dont think its a good idea, however i have wheeled the hell out of it and never broke a shaft/joint, only lock outs and a detroit which got taken out when the hub failed, fixed the detoit and only run drive flanges now
IMO save up for a D60 or something of similar strength if you want to run those tires, then dont worry breaking stuff to much unless you drop something with some HP in the truck. im debating now on a diamond axle with 60 outers and 35 splined stuff or just building a 60. i would hate to plow this axle up and get zero out of it when i plan to sell it when i have over 2 grand in it easily. i should have just put the money towards a 60 in the first place but hind sight is 20/20 :D

I ran 40 Iroks on my low pinion 44 with Warns/CTM's, ARB and 5.38's. Never broke a shaft, but ball joints were an issue. I didn't drive on road with those tires much if ever, just trail time.

I also took out ball joints on 37's as well. Only blew up a few lockouts and a couple rear ring and pinion sets

I'd say do it if you already have a boatload into the 44 like I did and it's not a street driver. If you have minimal into the 44 or are just thinking about it, get a 60 from the start you will be money ahead, trust me. I will only run 1 tons on my next rig.
