I clean with acetone, or a wire brush...not always convenient, either of them. Didn't find anything in a quick web search regarding acetone. Anyone know anything about acetone and high heat? Sam, Kyle?

Wow didn't even think about that one. I use brake cleaner all the time. Thanks for the heads up Doug!

Yeah I was warned about the chlorine in brake cleaner long ago. Chlorine-free brake cleaner is available, though I'm still weary of welding on whatever the hell else is in it. I generally grind where I'm welding, then clean up the rest with a wire wheel, and brake cleaner if its really necessary. Sean, I haven't heard anything on Acetone.

I have gotten in the habit of wearing my respirator when i have more than a couple welds on mild steel. I never weld aluminum or stainless without it on anymore. Definitely on when grinding or using a wire wheel. Lacquer thinner is my cleaner of choice.
