If you have the newer style keys that have a plastic head where you put it on your key ring, stop and use yuor metal one! I have a 2003 Taco and my plastic key broke the other day and i heard a clank and looked at the ground and saw my key that had broke n and it had droped to the ground , so if i had not looked , then i would have to pay a lock-smith about $40-$50 to get a re-key done. Well then my mom that has a 2002 RAV4 had broke her key the same day as mine ! What a coincidence! It seems that the plastic has gotten weak on the key and it broke , which could leave you stranded or leave you with a big bill for the lock smith. just a FYI

Pretty common problem. I broke both of them on my 2000 and had metal ones made at Wallyworld. Went ahead and got new ones made right after I bought the 2004.

I have a spare sitting on the key rack back home in Anchorage.

My first truck had a sensitive electrical system and the locks would occasionally operate on their own. I got locked out of it while I was working on it in the garage one time. After that I got a spare key made.

Then that same winter, it locked itself while it was warming up one morning, in 20 below weather. Luckily I had a spare key in my wallet.

I actually use my "spare" as my main key. It's just the key by itself (in case someone decides to jack my truck so they won't get all my other keys, and also to keep as much weight as possible from hanging off the ignition switch). I keep another truck key on my keyring with my other keys; the keyring remains in my pocket when I'm using my truck.

I have one of the ebay bling keys.. which is actually nice, cause it has a little clip on it. It's usefull to unclip the rest of my keys and clicker when wheeling to they don't swing around and be annoying. But yeah, everyone I know with a Tacoma has had the plastic key break.

I work in the forest industry and spend five days a week offroad in my Taco. I also just use a single key - a bunch of keys clinking around all day in the ignition gets annoying pretty quick.

My OEM key also broke, as did my mothers in her Corolla. Just about everyone I know with a Toyota has the black plastic keyring broken.

i cant stand having just one key. sometimes ill take my toyota key off if i need to have both trucks running at the same time for some reason, and i cant stand it. especially if i go do something (and didnt put it back on my main key ring) and have the key by itself in my pocket, im constantly checking my pocket to make sure its still there. i have a ton of keys, and they all go to something...

Don't be sad...

A spare key for a 2005 is about $90.00- and it's a dealer only item to boot.
The '05 will not work with a Home Depot (or any other) cut key--there is an imbedded chip to deactivate the engine kill system. That is why they cost $90. Apparently you can only get two replacements before they have to rip out your original imobilizer and replace the full system in your truck.
Personally, I got one cut already and keep it hidden on the truck to use for getting in--hopefully to get at the real key that I would have locked inside the truck. :)
