I'm getting new gears installed and they recommend changing the oil after 500 miles. That's fine for the rear but how do you get that much milage on the front gears. I only go into 4wd when off road and when it snows bad. I probably don't even have 500 miles on the factory gears yet with 78k on the truck. Is it gonna be alright for the front diff gears to start wheeling again after putting 500 street miles on the truck in 2wd.

Since you don't have manual hubs (unless you swapped them in), I would recommend driving around in 4wd Hi during rainy weather as much as you can. After you've accumulated a good amount of miles, change the gear oil and you should be good.

Don't worry about the front so much as it's usually under a much lighter load and at much slower speeds than the rear gears are. If you wheel it a lot this season just change it out next year or something and you'll be fine.
Ever who is was that told you to drive around on the pavement in 4 Hi, rainey weather or no. Don't do it and don't listen to anything else that person has to say because he is full of shit is talking right out of his ass.

your front gears will still be turning in 2wd since you don't have manual hubs but they wont be driven. either way i wouldn't worry much about it. just take it easy on it for a few weeks. and no 4x4 on the streets!

Ah yes. Returning to your tried and true acceptance through ridicule. You fulfill your persona so well. Keep it up, Dick. You're a shinning star.
