As you'll notice on the signature I have a 99 2.7 w/ 120k..my check engine light came on about 5k ago and i have replaced the O2 sensor and replaced the well needed air filter(but still am getting 12mpg)..also i have reset the computer numerous times but you give the truck 150 miles or so and that yellow light just comes on again...does anyone know the supposably "21" things that it could mean. Also what is the most common check engine light symptoms for a taco w/ that many miles?..or would it benefit just to go to the toyota place and put it on computer and let them tell me exactly what it is..and what would that cost me? Any info yall can give me will help.
-Thanks Bo

just take it to auto zone and they will read the code that is setting off the c.e.l for free.

they also have a nice OBD II scanner at checker auto that will tell you the problem along with the code, and they'll give you a free printout of the whole report.
my dealer wanted $90 to check the code, but if they end up fixing anything, that gets knocked off the total cost of the repair.

So did you just replace the parts without really knowing what was causing the CE light to come on? Seems kinda dumb to just throw parts at an issue if you don't know the true source of the problem. Have that CE code scanned and then proceed from that...

post the codes and then you will get some help. Cant help much if you dont know what code is being set.

No it didnt seem dumb because my air filter was litterally trash..and usually the recommended time for a O2 replacement is from 100 to 120k... :)

Hey guys well i went and had it checked it showed up as code P0440...which is Fuel Cap, EVAP canister or hose disconnected, purge or vent solenoid defective, or vacuum leak at engine....and i tightened the fuel cap up while at autozone but i say i give it 2 days and itll be back on again...by the way whats a EVAP canister?..and the purge or vent solenoid?...But i dont think any of this could harm my mpg's

I had that problem on my 02, it was a bad fuel cap seal, I had replaced it with one from wally world with the lock on it, about a month went by and I started getting those p0440 codes and it always came back so after 3 or 4 times I put the old cap back on and it went away.... the only good thing that happened out of this was that I bought my own code reader and it's saved my a** a few times, especially since it'll read 96+ year models, which helped me on my wife's car and a few of my friends....
