I'm getting a significant "thunky/clunky/rattle" when turning right, especially at low speeds in parking lots making tight turns nad I can't isolate the noise to figure out what's wrong.

It sounds very similar to tire rub, but the tires aren't rubbing. Lug nuts are tight.

It has gotten progressively worse where on a decently strong corner at 70mph on the freeway tonight I heard this noise over the drone of 32" mud terrains.

Any help on where to start (or continue) checking would be great.

Does this sound like a CV? Ball Joint?

2002 Tacoma w/ ~45k miles
40k with SAW's (never recharged, could this be the issue and the tire is just bouncing w/ no nitrogen?)

90% chance it is a bad CV, you will most likely see a torn boot on the cv if it is bad, or at least a hole where the grease has been thrown out. Jack the front of the truck up and rotate the wheel with the steering cranked over like in a turn. You should be able to hear it and see the slop int hte CV shaft.

this is going to sound like a real stupid question, but what would CV slop look like? I have been hearing weird noised from my drivers side in the suspension from somewhere and I cant figure it out.

grab the axle shaft and try to shake it up/down/side to side. ANY play other than the normal spinning that the shaft does is not good. If while shaking the shaft (now that sounds interesting) you hear/feel any clunking, etc, that is the problem.

you don't need to jack up the front to do this.

with manual hubs the noise is only noticable while in 4wd but with ADD since the axle is constantly in motion it occurs all the time.

Thanks, what am I looking at price wise for a new CV joint, and where's the cheapest place to get one?

Dealer only?

Online?
you swap out the entire half-shaft. find an Autozone or other parts house, should run you around $90 with exchange. Call around for best price.

pull out the old one and slap in the new. With practice we've gotten them (ADDs) down to 20 min out here in Norcal, manual hubs take a little longer ;)

the Haynes manual has a pretty good section on the swap or several of us here can talk you through it. Post a 'wrenchathon' for your area for some help.

AHHH...I was reading this tread thinking to my self,I am getting a clunking noise when I turn also, but It did not start untill I put my sway bar back on.
I will have to check them today.
LOL, that would certainly be cheaper to fix than a CV ;) you might not have tightened the nuts quite enough.
