dana 60 and 44 are solid axles. are you comtemplating going SAS for your lift??

well if you want to cut your IFS stuff out and do a solid axle swap you have to put a straight axle under there, the easiest way is to find a dana 44 axle out of a waggy, that is if you want to stay about the stock width, I went with 3/4 ton axles so D60 rear and D44 front, so the front end is much stronger than the IFS stuff and the rear axle is alot stronger than the stock rear axle. just take some time and do some research ask some specifics and you will be a straight axle expert :D :welder:
Read the axle swap section religously. Also, until they completely shut down the old NB, I would go back and read through the axle swap folder there. More info than you would ever need to have.
so its not something i have to do though if i get it lifted..but if i get it lifted then decide i want to get solid axels later would that mess with the lift? and if i do lift it without the solid axels how week would the stock ones be?

Ummm... Your truck is currently IFS (Independent Front Suspension). If you get a lift for it right now, it will be an IFS lift (coilovers or spacers). If you decided to go solid axle (it's a-x-l-e, not a-x-e-l) at some point in the future, then you'd be getting rid of all of you IFS stuff, such as your coilovers, upper and lower A-arms, CV's, etc. and replacing all of that with a solid axle (Dana 60 or 44, or some other axle) and leaf springs & shocks or links & coilovers (much larger and different coilovers than what are currently on your truck with the IFS suspension). So yes, if you get it lifted and then decide you want to get solid axles later, it would mess with the lift in that you wouldn't be able to use the lift. The stock axles aren't necessarily weakened by a lift per se. But the stock axles are generally much weaker than those found in a Dana 44 or 60.

To make it easier to understand, look at the rear axle of your truck. That's a solid axle, with leaf springs and shocks. Now look at the front axles and suspension. Looks nothing like the rear, right? That's because it's IFS. Doing a solid axle swap up front would make the front axle/suspension look like your current rear axle/suspension (assuming you went with leafs up front rather than links & coilovers).

Like the other guys said, read thru the axle swap section on here and on the old board. Plenty of info to educate yourself about solid axle setups.

I think you need to tell us what you use your truck for before we can offer advice.

Is it a street truck? If so, it would be kinda pointless to spend several grand just to lift it.

Do you wheel the piss out of it and break lots of IFS stuff? Then maybe you want to research doing an axle swap. You're not just limited to having a D44 or D60 though. One of the members here makes some kickass custom Toy axles.

If I had money to burn, I would put a 60 in front along with a coil setup.

Do you have any problems with the 44 front and the iroc's?

only with blowing the hubs 15 feet from the truck :D and breaking my detroit, after i fixed the detroit and started to run drive flanges i have zero problems and have gave it hell. im in the search for two front 60's so i can do rear stear but that will be after the motor/tranny/x-case swap. as long as you have some kind of chromo up there and good joints ya should be ok, plus the irok's are extreemly light which helps, im sure if i stepped up to a 39-42" tsl i would blow it up though :D

no it wont be a street truck...i wont be wheeling it like super hard, most in mud and deep snow and some moderately difficult trails but nothing like real hardcore...yet :D that will come later when i wont need it for an everyday driver and have more money to fix what i will break..
you need to do some major reading.
