Hey everyone I am currently running Dana 60s from a 1979 ford in my 96 Taco. The front has the 35 spline outers, an ARB and 5:38s so I am good to go there. The rear is a stock 30 slpine with a yukon spool and 5:38s. I have a friend who will give me a Dana 70 out of 94 2500 dodge diesel for free. He spoke with Randy's ring and pinion and was told it is a Dana 70u which only has 32 spline axles and you can't get 5:38's only 5:13s or 5:86. I want to put a detroit in the rear and was planning on doing it to the dana 60 with 35 splines which would require hogging out the spindles new axles and the detroit. I started thinking though and realized my 97 dodge 2500 diesel has a Dana 80. What do you all know about the Dana 70u and how could I tell if it really is. I haven't had a chance to pull an axle and count splines but I'll try to get to his house in the next week or so.

Faint smell of bullshit from the guy at Randy's...

Right off the bat, they are immediately dismissing the 70's shafts simply on spline count, when diameter and neckdown are just as important, if not more so.

Additionally, they aren't acknowledging the difference in pinion shaft diameter and ring gear diameter, both of which give the advantage to the 70.

Search d70u on here- there was a thread not too long back where zszac mentioned a thing or two about them. This folder I'm pretty sure- for additional information that is.

Thanks for the info guys and the links. I realize the dana 70 should have 1.5 inch diameter axles which are what I would put in the 60. I guess I need to figure out if anyone make 5:38's for Dana 70s.
