The rear suspension on my truck is so stiff, that I've got to change it. I'm currently running the Downey AAL and Ranch RS99144 shocks. Some people have mentioned I should try changing the shocks, but I just don't buy it. I thought the weight of a camper shell would help some, but it really hasn't. Therefore, I'm opting for 2 different setups. The one setup is the Deaver 3 leaf, 1" lift shackles, and some 5100s. The other setup is a set of Alcans and 5100s. For those that have gone from the 3leaf to the full leaf pack, or that have ridden in both, is there a considerable different in the ride for $200+? I've searched posts and have read how much better each one rides when compared to a single AAL, which is obvious, but I couldn't find any info comparing the two. I'm curious to know if the extra money for the Alcans is justifiable.

My Deaver 3-leaf AAL and Bils 5100's ride like a cadillac..Why not try the billies first and then change the other if necessary..The 5100's will make a marked difference in my opinion.. :2cents:

shock valving makes a world of difference.
the bilstein 5100's are 255/70 i believe.... not sure what yours are. Yes a heavy duity spring will cause a stiffer ride. Its going to be hard to compare a Deaver 3leaf to a Alcan spring pack as the Deaver 3leaf is a AAL not a full on spring pack... unless your going custom or they came out with something new.

I have the adjustable Ranchos, and I can't tell a difference from 1 and 9.
I do understand that the Deaver 3 Leaf is essentially an AAL type setup. The reviews on this board from individuals, like TacoCrazy, are intriguing, along with the cost when compared to a new leaf pack. I was just trying to find some input as to whether or not the roughly $300 difference is justified.

if you can't feel the difference from 1-9, i'd say the stiff ride is mostly due to your aal. i have a rancho aal in the rear with the rancho 9000s and i can definately feel the difference from 1-9. try going with a different aal. or did you just put everything on?

if you just recently put everything on, it's probably really stiff from being new

alcans are generally very stiff unless you make sure they know you want a soft spring. also, if you cant tell a difference from 1 or 9, then either something is very wrong with your shock or your aal is very stiff. i doubt it's the latter since downeys are NOT that rough.
