Just a heads up, I've had a couple bad Toyota oil filters in a row. The seal failed on them after a month or so causing a small leak. Nothing critical, but you'll definitely have a drip under your truck and if you really let it go you'd probably get an oil light.

It looks like the gasket is collapsing and allowing the metal part of the filter to contact the engine, and eventually allowing oil to pass.

No, I'm not over-tightening the oil filter. Maybe I just have bad luck, but considering both filters failed the same way I have to suspect the filter.

What Dealmaster said..;)

The part number is important as well as the location of manufacture(should be marked).

WHen you remove these filters. and clean the engine block mating surface are you seeing any irregularities?

I do lube the gasket before installing, and I did give the surface a good inspection before the latest filter I just installed. The last two were from a batch of filters I bought a ways back, hopefully this new one will be different.

I don't have my digital cam with me so I'll just try and describe what the filter looks like after I took it off.

If you look at the gasket, it is above the metal lip for most of the circumference. But for a few inches it is even with the lip and the other give away was that some of the paint was chipped off the metal can right where the low spot was. The last filter that began to leak I didn't take a good look at since I figured it was just a random failure, so I don't know if the failure was the same.

Sounds like over-tightening, but I do all my oil changes myself so I know it's not that. Unlike a Jiffy Lube change, I can take my filters off 3000 miles later without a strap wrench. :)
