binding

and you don't bind things up every now and then...like when turning? ;)
well I did 1 time when I was pulling into the driveway, but I started to pulling it outta 4 and back to 2, other than that I don't have to make any sharp turns on my daily route, so I've never had any binding b4. I usually use this as an excuse to get my 10 miles a month in to test my 4WD since I hardly ever get to go offroad. Thanx, Wes

I would guess lots of damage. I actually hit the 4WD button on my tcase shifter yesterday on drive pavement and the truck went into 4x4.

The thing started to bind up after about 30 feet, which is what tipped me off. Getting it OUT of 4x4 was a pain in the ass because of that. When it finally DID come out, there was a LOUD thud/bang from the tcase. That kind of thud/bang = you just barely avoided destroying something for good.

When I got home, I put it in 4x4 again (on my loose gravel driveway) and luckily it engaged/disengaged just fine, so it's OK. But man, what a heart-stopper.

When I first got my truck I drove in 4WD on the pavement for ~1/4 mile (no turning). If something broke, I would obviously know-right?

Driving in a straight line shouldn't hurt anything. Turning is what would make it bind up.
Even in a straight line, differences in weight on the front & rear tires, or differences in tire pressures, will cause binding to gradually accumulate. (You may get enough tire scrub to limit it once it starts getting big enough though).
