Engine oil was almost a 1/8" below the low mark on the dipstick but I've never had an oil indicator light come on. Aside from the fact that I'm definitely and suddenly burning oil at 220K miles which is a new thing out of nowhere, could this be an indicator/sensor failure or is there leeway on the level?
Last oil change was 3K miles ago and this again is a new thing within the last oil change. Any additional thought or somewhere I can look for the loss? I don't want to deal with this for another 200K miles, I assume burning oil affects things downrange like O2 sensors etc.

Yeah, what Scuba said about the oil idiot light. That just tells you your oil pressure is low. There is no sensor for low oil level, but when you get too low you starve the pump and lose pressure triggering the idiot light.

I know on the 02 if the light comes on the oil pressure is under 5 psi, normal pressure should be between 45 and 60 psi. Remember that oil acts a liquid bearing between parts (which is why you need to use what is recommended for your engine...you are NOT smarter than the engineers that designed your motor...just larger hands, if you have worked on these engines you know what I mean).
