Anyone know how to rewire the fog lamp switch so I can turn them on regardless of the headlight switch? Specifically for an '05 Tacoma.
I don't know why Toyota thought it was necessary to have the headlights on in order to have the fogs on. I have had many occasions when driving with JUST fogs made things an order of magnitude easier to see (such as white-out conditions). Maybe some sort of regulation I don't know of.

Are you talking about stock fog lights, or aftermarket? I have a diagram on my site for the after market ones. I'm sure it would be simular to the stock ones as well.

Not sure about the wiring, but the reason for toyota doing it so your headlights have to be on, (i belive,(waits for flamewar to begin)) Is something to do with DOT regs. Something about that "fog lamps" are considered auxiliary illumination, wile your headlight are considered "primary" illumination. So to run with just them on would be "illegal" :p Yea right, whatever. I was always under the impression that if you have good fog lights and dont run your low beams you can see better and would be less likely to run into things.

atwinda,
I am refering to the stock fog lights. They have a secondary switch on the dash but they will not turn on unless the headlights are on, not even if the running lights are illuminated (which is how I would like it).

Well, the wiring diagram on my site will still apply. You just gotta find where the wire for the siwtch is getting it's power from, and change it to an always on power source (ie, battery, acc wire, etc...)

I thought it may be a reg or law. I would like to modify my truck anyway. I have been out when the weather was bad, driven by many authorities with just fogs and running lights on and had not one stop me for driving illegally. So I guess I am willing to take that chance. Like you said, and as I noted, there are many more reasons to use fogs INSTEAD of headlights under certain conditions. I suppose it is big brother trying to protect us from ourselves.
