Gear ratio opinion..

I'm looking to re-gear and wanted some direct opinions for my setup. First of all the truck is a 97' Std cab 3.4 V-6 5spd with E-locker (4.10's)..I run BFG 33x10.50x15 M/T's and do not plan to go larger..I do not drive the truck daily, but when I do drive it it's on the highway to the wheelin' place of choice..The majority of the wheeling I do is rocky, slow and technical. I'm leaning torwards 4.88's but don't want to have a real highway issue..I can't afford the transfer case direction or that would be the way I'd go..Just looking for more input..Thanks in advance..

with what you describe, 4.56s. Other than installing a crawler (dual tcase) there's nothing you do with the OE tcase gears.

Yeah... I knew the tcase gears wasn't an option at this time, and the crawler is just out of reach for the ole' pocket..I believe 4.56 may be the better route, but a slower crawl would sure be nice...I didn't wheel it much stock (31's), so I can't really remember how the crawl ratio felt. I figured 4.56 and 33's would crawl about the same as 4.10 and 31's..I appreciate all the info and the links so far..
no, with 4.56s your crawl ratio goes up as you wind up with an 'adjusted' gear ratio of 4.28:1 down from 4.10. as suggested, going with 4.30s would get you close to stock at 4.04:1 4.88s put you at about a 4.58 ratio with 33" tires.

That's kinda' what I was trying to say... basically that if I ran 4.56's with my current 33" tire it would have a similar low range feel as I did with the 4.10/31" combo. I really need a "better than stock" crawl ratio for slower travel in the rocks..I really appreciate the specs hytenor..I am a "spec" kinda guy..
better than stock would be the 4.56/33" combo.
if stock is 4.10/31 then 4.56/33 will feel like having 4.30s with 31" tires.
4.30s/33s will feel like having stock 4.10s and 31" tires.
4.88s/33s will feel like having 4.58s and 31" tires.

stock crawl ratio in 4-lo/first gear is 40.36:1
with 4.56s/33s it will be 42.13:1
with 4.88s, 45.08:1 (add a 4.7 Marlin crawler...212:1 hee, hee)
(based on tires that are an actual 33" but you get the idea)

Damnit man, you're just full of figures aren't you....I appreciate the wealth of info..It certianly helps in making an educated decision.
I like my 4.88s/33s but I have the 2.7. If I had the v6 I'd go with 4.56 so the hwy rpms wouldn't be so bad. I run about [email protected] 70 but I have a slightly higher top gear than you do.
you can get estimates of rpms at whatever speed with different gears off the calculatar page on the NE site.
with the v6 5-sp you have a 5th gear of .838 and factor the tcase at 1 to come up with top gear rpms on the hwy.

Do you know if a Tundra diff will interchange with the Taco?
I wouldn't think so but good question.
